Welcome to D 1.....Iona Rugby. After last yrs success going undefeated in the Metro conference, winner of 4 leaf Clover tourney & the Prestigous Beast of the East (32 team field),the Iona boys had only one way to go! D 1 competion! Iona opened on the road against StonyBrook. Iona 24 StonyBrook 17. This was a great win.The Iona boys showed great resilence & determination, spoiling StonyBrook's Homecoming. Iona had an impressive group of new players joining the returning ruggers,(8 starter's graduated).Iona travels well, with a great fan base and a tailgate food fest that is the best meal of the week for the 35-40 players...This year Iona is a charter member of the newly formed EMPIRE league. Upcoming games include Kings Pt & Fordham.

Iona defeats Fordham 22-10. Saturday was a beautiful day for the Iona ruggers. Both their A & B sides won their match vs Fordham. Many thanks to the Bag Pippers, and the large turn out of rugby supporters at Iona. The boys are undefeated in the D1 Empire conference. Next up, Sunday @ Iona vs Stony Brook.

Congrats to the Iona Ruggers! I agree a win over Fordham is always a plus. The Gael sports teams certainly have a lot of buzz about them this fall. Soccer, X-Country and Rugby are all doing well. Next up, HOOPS!

Next up, HOOPS! jcgael: I agree about the impressive start with Gael sports. I think two pleasant surprises is women's soccer and volleyball. Both have new coaches, who seem to have already instilled a winning attitude. Volleyball graduated something like 8 seniors, and the new coach came on board just days before the season started.

SJG,
Thanks so much for pointing those two squads out. I typically view all of the team pages for news but have been a little lax lately. It is really good to see women's soccer making some moves. And, that's an outstanding job so far by the Lady Gaels volleyball squad. Replacing that many players with experience is difficult and changing coaches just before the start of the season only makes their current record look more amazing. Way to go Ladies!

Congrats Men! Outstanding work, now keep the ball moving and no knock ons please. ;-) I've got a dumb question. I didn't think Rugby is a NCAA governed sport. How is it D1? I have been following the scores the past to years and I am impressed. But did the program simply go from club level to varsity?

Iona Rugby made the move to D1 after the strong showing in the D2 ranks the last few yrs. They were a member of N.E.R.F.U. (New England) which has over 230 active rugby teams. The International Rugby Board is the governing board. The N.C.A.A. has no authority. Iona college reconizes rugby @ Iona as a club sport. Some colleges/Univ support it as if it was a regular Di sport, Iona doesn't. This yr Iona moved into a new league. The Empire Conference, this is split between Syracuse, Binghamton, St. Bonnie(currently # 19) ,Suny Buffalo (sweet 16 in 2010) & Brockport. Iona #23 is in with Stony Brk, Fordham & USMMA. I hope this helps. The boys will be playing @ Iona this Saturday @ 3 o"clock.

Stony Brk 27 Iona 20. The boys from North ave took this on the chin. The first league loss in almost 2 yrs. This game went back & forth and was still indoubt with under a minute to go. Well played Stony Brook! They avenged a Homecoming loss at the hands of Iona a few weeks back. These two teams will be undoubtedly be playing the top two teams in the Western conference (Buffalo, Syracuse, St Bonnie, Binghamton, Brockport)in about a month or so.The crowd today was fantastic, seating on the Iona rugby side was tough to find. This coming week is Homecoming @ Iona. The Rugby Team will be playing in prime time 2:30 vs the King's Pt. Come on down for a great day of rugby.

Iona 41 Kings Pt 13..Homecoming. A Sunny beautiful day, with a pregame that included Iona's Bag Pipers, Iona Dancers, Cheerleaders,Color Guard and a couple of laps around the field from the Nationally ranked Iona Soccer boys. A full house of fans and alumni were at all four corners of Mazzella field. The Rugby Gaels remain tied for first. Hafe time of this match had Maritime up 10 -7. Iona regroup and played Iona Rugby the 2nd half.Tremendous showing of Iona spirit on display today with many alumni ruggers showing up.Todays game was coached by two alumni. The two regular coach's weren't able to lead the boys, due to rugby committments in California & out of the country. Next game Fri @ Fordham. GO GAEL'S !!!

Iona boys traveled to Rose hill & took on Fordham last fri 10/28. Iona 36- Rams 17. This is the third year in a row that Iona finished first in their conference. They tied with Stony Brk for the title. They will likely travel up to St. Bonaventure at a time yet to be announced & take on the Bonnies who looks like winners in the West conference. Great job @ D 1 level. Coach Fife ( Iona grad & N.Y Athletic club rugby standout ) & Coach Expo ( Philippines National rugby coach) did an outstanding job of working with the large number of new players, blending with the Iona seniors.
