Tough loss for Iona but you guys are gonna storm the MAAC this year. It probably won't happen but an 18-0 season isn't off the table. Gaels will be 17-1 or 16-2 easily. We will all scout fairfield tonight...8pt underdogs vs minnesota. as we know they lost to providence at home but i don't put meaning into that...Providence obviously had a major scouting report advantage with cooley knowing the weaknesses of all players. If Fairfield turns out to be weak, I could see Iona going 17-1. but i dont think anything is going to be "easy" in the maac...16-2 would be a heck of a season and an accomplishment

I may be wrong, and will gladly be set straight by Old Gael, but I thought some of our "lax" D was related to trying to get the tempo we wanted. They did a great job of denying Glove the ball; they are very physical. Turning point, imo was Scott going out with the fifth foul. Thought he was taking over the game at that point.
That's a high major team with some big time players. They stepped up when they had to. A couple of more breaks our way and we win.

I really don't know how to feel. Great effort, the talent is there, and I think we will get better. Played well for most of the game. As exciting an early season game as I have ever seen. But.... We Have to find a way to close these games out. had the lead and under 20 seconds left.
Only one game. The test will be tomorrow. Heads up and take care of business. We have a special team here.

I think that is the partially the reason. however, there were numerous times in the half court offense where purdue methodically broke down iona. Lack of rotation, lack of understanding of the 2-3 zone for the Gaels

I thought Machado had a horrible game on D. He didn't pick up well when they were in the zone, and when playing man he didn't fight through one pick ( Even Gottlieb mentioned in the broadcast their D seemed to improve after he fouled out.) On the offensive end he never looked better. Glover looked tired to often, and missed to many Ft's. We have to play some D, their going to light up the scoreboard, but they need more stops. Ridley is much better than I expected, honestly I don't think he got enough touches in the 2nd half. Too bad they lost, I think they would have had a good chance against Temple.

Boxscore really doesn't tell the story 48% fg; 53% from 3; pretty even on the boards; 70% foul shooting; Only surprise was that we had 12 turnovers to their 7.
They did shoot 45% from the field and Smith was 5-6 from 3.
Hummel should never have been allowed to get that shot.
Tech foul was a bogus call.
Momo and Sctt are stll adjusting to each other. When they do, look out! I'm exhausted from the game!
Put the suicide watch on for Joebird!

Joebird makes some good points. A lose is a lose is a lose, but this lose exceeded by expectations. All of Iona's good teams played great defense and there was none of that today. I just wonder if this is the stractegy of the coach, we are very good so we'll just run up and down and outscore the opponent.
The foul calls in critical situations was curious, but Big Ten or the MAAC, who do you think is going to get the calls?
It also appears to me the longer we hold the balll on offense the less chance we have of scoring.
Actually in final shot situations, i can't remember the last time Iona worked for and took a makable shot.
Great action, great effort, we can only hope.

No suicide, I always expect to lose like that. calmed down a bit but can you believe that half court shot?. That's why Iona lost.
Quick comments:
Glover should forget trying to improve his game to be in the NBA, just play like last year. He was mostly disappointing.
Ridley is good
This is a top 5 college basketball offense
The Defense was atrocious
That elbow foul was ridiculous, but I guess that is the rule, a very bad rule
Only Doug Sherman can make one of the most exciting early season games I have ever seen sound boring.
Randy D is much improved, just don't shoot so much.
Jenkins is getting screwed with the addition of MoMo, as is Armand and Smyth
MoMo will drive us nuts and make us very happy
I guess Rashard James being one of our best guards is not true
poor trinity.
These tournaments rarely go well for Iona

I do not like to see Mike bringing the ball up, or even handling it so much on the perimeter. When Mike handled the ball outside, it seemed to slow down and even disrupt our offense. We have too many excellent ball handlers for a PF to be bringing the ball up. The tick-tack calls went to the BCS team. Mo Mo got hit with a moving screen - one that would make Alejo Proud Ridley is a great pick up. That was a great first game. Purdue has a great coach, and they are likely a Top 25 team. Agree with others here that we need to tighten up our D.

Tough 1st game. Maybe things would have been different had we worked out our kinks against a St Francis type

I know it was a disappointing loss, but a realistic view should be kept in mind. The old bugaboo struck again. I had that feeling even when we took the lead with a few seconds left that we were gonna lose. I guess over the years I've been conditioned to it, but it's still hard to take. Looking at the bright side though, it was an excellent game and Iona proved to all those watching and listening throughout the country that we are a force to be reckoned with. Time heals all wounds, and after a string of victories this game will be only a distasteful memory.
From the little that I have seen of the team in practice and in today's game, I firmly believe that we will have a superior season. So buck up fellas -- good times lie ahead.
Hope I'll be able to post more frequently in the coming weeks when my right arm improves.
