I didn't see the game; but maybe someone who did can shed some light on our lack of defense (and Purdue's) Disappointing

heres some reasons;
-fast pace game overall with both teams shooting pretty well --- so it wasn't all bad "D"...sometimes you can only defend so well.
-iona had problems executing the 2-3 zone, problems with rotation and communication. I thought glover was sluggish and didn't provide any type of presence in the middle.
-At times, Iona seemed to be getting beat off the dribble. Had problems with staying in front of guys and purdue seemed to have a quickness advantage in some matchups
-Lack of defensive mindset. Iona was more interested to get back on offense, rather than locking down defensively. Effort was low on defense and a lot of points given away on easy buckets due confusion and pure laziness.
Overall, sloppy and disorganized defense, but its early season so lots of time to work on it. Players need to gel and have an understanding and trust for teammates. It comes with time. Was glad to see how well we worked on offense, but lots of room for improvement. The offense will always be there for the Gaels. Once they work out the defensive issues (which they will), they are a scary team.

Purdue's half court 3 point heave at the first half buzzer didn't help. I thought their top scorer shuffled his feet before setting for the game winning 3...so we were in it from start to finish. Purdue had a mini run in the first 90 seconds of the first half that put us in a bit of a hole. Purdue had more easy baskets than we did and Momo looked uncomfortable for much of the game. This was Purdue's 3rd game and our opener....which was a plus for them.

Yeah, I think we have to remember this is our first game, with some new guys in key positions, and we had to play a high major opponent. Don't know the extent of the injury to Digs, but I thought he would add to our defense.
Be interesting to see if he and Gomez get any minutes tomorrow.

But, Purdue is one good team with a great Coach.

That white shooter broke our back a couple of different times during the games, he might be the best shooter in basketball

I was disappointed in the number of layups that Purdue had. ESPN's Gottlieb said it best in the final minutes when he said that Iona had decided not to play defense for the first 35 minutes. The game was too reminiscent of last year's defensive malaise. I'd rather lose 78-77. A lot of pressure on today's game. GO GAELS!

Keep the faith guys.... this will be a great season I agree with all of the above and to me the negative highlights were: Momo tried to do too much When Machado fouled out, our leader was gone. Panic set in Glover did look gassed Lots of good shooting guards and not enough basketballs BUT, we should eat up the MAAC!

Just a point about Glover being gassed. I agree completely, and the reason, imo, was that he didn't have any time off. Played TOO MUCH in the first half, w/o being subbed for. I attribute that to TC's lack of confidence in his frontcourt bench. With a game under his belt I think TC will be more comfortable in resting Mike, now that he's seen what Taj and Randy can do.

Where do you guys think Purdue ranks in the Big 10?
Iona is right there with them - assuming we take of business today.

A lot of love on the Purdue board for the Gaels! They're hoping we run the table, like we hoping they run the table.
