Thanks for the memory jog, Cjb! I know this has long been your position and I agree with it.
Go Gaels!!!

Who would we most want to see in the Bracketbuster game at Iona later this year? If they are having another good year, I would like to see one of the 'brand name' Mid Majors........like VCU, Gonzaga, or Butler. I'm thinking Belmont

Can anyone here provide lineups of some of the past great Iona teams for comparison?

Two things:
1. Bracketbuster helps out in scheduling and playing pretty good teams, and I'm not saying it helps you get an at-large bid. But it does schedule two games a year for you, or at least it usually does. 2. I have to apologize to the Authority. My eyes failed me as I thought he was referring to SB, Jr., as SB, Sr. played before the Authority was born. And I guess I'd agree with him, but this team is much better from deep.

So long as I still owe you and OT that dinner there is no need for apologies. Although you'll have to come to FLorida to collect as I've relocated. Wonder what Voekl has in store this year.

I'm not sure about best team since Ruland. I'd take the teams with Steve Burrt Sr. That guy was a freak. I agree that the Burtt Sr./Springer Sr. teams were a bit more talented. They were much deeper up front, though not as deep (but just as good, if not better) in the backcourt. That said, they earl 80's teams were not all that fundamentally sound or well coached. Also, they did not shoot well from outside (which wasn't as big a deal without the 3 pointer). Also, what about the 1997-98 team? Kirksay, Hameed, McDonald, Miller, Mitchell, Grant, etc. The didn't shoot the 3 as well as this group, but they played MUCH better defense. One thing to remember is that with all the 1 and done guys these days, major college basketball is not a strong as it was 15 or 30 years ago. So while this team might not be better than say the 1984 or 1998 teams, they probably have a better chance to advance in the NCAA's than those teams did.

ichoops, wrong, wrong and wrong. Why am I not surprised. Why must you question "the authority"? Steve Burrt Sr. was the man. LaSalle was the only thing stopping us from glory. Huh? When Steve Burtt Sr. was a Gael: 1981 - Lost to LIU in the ECAC Metro Finals. Burtt was ejected for figthing and the Gaels fell apart. 1982 - Beat SPC in OT in the first MAAC Final. Troy Truesdale made an amazing followup dunk at the buzzer to send it to OT. - The MAAC didn't have an automatic bid yet, and the Gaels were snubbed by the committee. 1983 - Lost in the MAAC Finals on a 30 foot buzzer beater by National U's Mark Murphy. Another NIT bid. On the bright side, National U got snubbed by the NCAA's. 1984 - Defeated National U in the MAAC final to win the MAAC's first automatic bid. Lost to Virginia in a heartbreaker at the Meadowlands, with Grimes missing key free throws and Othell Wilson's last second shot dancing around the back of the rim before dropping in.

Gaelman takes "the authority" behind the woodshed.

Best Iona team? How about the 1979-80 team starting Jeff Ruland, Alex Middleton, Mike Palma, Kevin Hamilton and Glenn Vickers. They beat #2 Louisville with Darrell Griffifth and the McCray brothers by 17 at MSG. Rules had over 30. If I am correct, that was the last game Louisville lost that year. They went on to win the National Championship.

I am a fan of the Bracketbuster Day.......lots of interesting matchups. I would love to see a second game added, like Gottlieb described. Imagine Iona's RPI, if they beat a 'Butler' type and then a team like 'UCLA'.
