I’m starting a new tread on the referring because some comments in the St. Joe’s game thread sparked some thoughts.
Whoever assigned that 3-man ref team for the St. Joe’s game should be fired! Everybody knows Joe Demayo is incompetent, the baldhead ref is almost as bad and the one with the black hair who is the better of the three. . .left the court after the first overtime because he thought the game was over and had to be called back onto the court for the second overtime. If you’re the scheduler you can’t assign 2 incompetents to a 3-man group.
Personally I like to get to games for the pregame warm-ups and the first thing I look for is the referring crew. And for St. Joe’s when I saw Demayo and the baldheaded guy I knew we were all in for a challenging night.
And yes, Joe Demayo taking timeout to tie his shoes and later for an extended review of clock management was about these refs having trouble running up and down the court with 20-year old kids. Joe Demayo as far back as I can remember was never a consistent referee unless you count his tenure as being “homer” for Siena up in Albany by never calling fouls on the home team. However, as he aged he now has a beer-belly so he can’t get up and down the court with the players to get into position to see plays. With Iona’s up-tempo style of play refs like Demayo not only are out of position but there are a lot more ball possessions for each team so there are a lot more opportunities for the incompetents to miss calls. As a senior citizen I’ve sensitive to age discrimination however if you’re out of shape like Demayo you should find something else to do.
And is it just me or do all these referees have to go back to school and relearn some of the rules. . . for instances, what a walking violation is? To me the refs are too quick to call violations on player ball fakes and oblivious to players that take a couple of extra steps before a jump shot. . .as Robbie Hummel of Purdue did when he made his 3 in the last minute of the game down in Puerto Rico and nothing was called.
In Puerto Rico the referring was also bad with some officials not even knowing the rules. However in a way you almost expect it as you have officials from many different conferences. And when Iona goes on the road the team not only has to be better than their opponents, the team has to perform better to offset the homer refs. For as long as I’ve been going to home games in New Rochelle I can’t recall games where I would label the refs as homers for Iona. However, I would label a lot of the refs as incompetents and something should be done about it by getting rid of some deadwood and forcing others to attend extended classes on the rules and learning consistency.
