Ken Pomeroy has Iona ranked #32 after the successful Western NY swing. I can't recall when Pomeroy has had the Gaels ranked that high. I do recall after the Louisville win in 1980 that either the UPI or AP had them as #19.

While those numbers are good, the NCAA committee REALLY focuses most on RPI, and our RPI is in the 50s right now. The good news is that a lot of our OOC foes have decent RPIs, such as Denver sporting an 11 right now. The bad news is that most of the MAAC have poor RPIs, so our league won't do us many favors. Right now I'd say the only MAAC game we could lose and not get hurt too badly would be at Fairfield.

Well, the solution to that problem is to not lose any MAAC games...

Even more impressive, imo, if you look at Pomeroy's "four factors" we're ranked 13.

Wouldn't it be a good idea for a couple of Mid Major Conferences to set up a late season matchup amongst their top teams....for instance......you would have the top MAAC Teams play the top Colonial Conf. Teams. It would expand on the Bracketbuster concept. Just plan for it in advance, perhaps at the expense of a December out of conference game. In most years, it would be one of the toughest games of the season. The home court advantage switch each year. Who wouldn't like to see our best line up against a strong George Mason or VCU team that had been having a great year?

Dan, the problem with that is that, say, in the case of the MAAC, when you have a Rider that's picked 3rd in the MAAC and they turn into a team that looks like 10th right now--you are in essence screwing their CAA foe, not helping.
That's why the BracketBuster is good--you're going to be paired against a team with a similar RPI to yours.
To expand on your thought, though, you could do it where it's a flex sked sort of thing, with the matchups not predetermined. Perhaps two weeks before the games are to take place, you take the standings for the league that day to form the matchups. (You can't do it for less than 2 weeks because of travel concerns.) You'd have 1st place MAAC vs 1st place CAA, and down the line.
The other problem ties into the travel concerns. If Iona's playing at Loyola and at Fairfield in 2 huge MAAC games, I'm not sure I want those games sandwiching a longer road trip, such as a VCU. Would be one thing to draw Hofstra, would be another to have to head to Virginia.

Since the RPI changed a few years back the sagarin's or similar power ratings are used a lot more than they use to. The new RPI's tend to give Mid major higher rankings than they use to and the Sagarins is used as a second rating to give validity to the RPI.
For mid majors it is used as a reason to invalidate a good RPI. Having a strong Sagarin in addition to a strong RPI is hard for the committee to ignore. Iona is on pace for a good sagarin, and unlike the RPI, it doesn't go down simply by playing a bad opponent. If you beat them by what you should it stays where it is.
Iona needs to get two quality wins in the next 3 to add to their resume.

Interesting to see that we earned no votes in either the AP or ESPN/USA Today Coaches' polls. Cluess is a voter in the latter.
Harvard in the top 25 in both.

Sagarin has us @ 25 today, and RealTime RPI has us up to 26--a 26 point jump!
