Eugene, get on the horn and form an alliance with your counterparts at Bucknell, Rutgers and NC State to have at least one of these schools represented in the annual Jimmy V Classic.
Reach out to the V Foundation, ESPN and Madison Square Garden to get this done.
This years field at MSG next week: Villanova vs Missouri and Marquette vs Washington.
No disrespect intended toward these schools, but where's the connection? Where's the fan draw to MSG from Missouri and Washington?
If ever there was a year for Iona to participate - this would've been it.
Some food for thought when scheduling ooc home games becomes difficult - those are precisely the types of teams Iona should be playing at MSG... not a conference opponent who would've been playing us at Hynes anyway!

Would be great if they had Rutgers, Iona, Bucknell and NC State as the Jimmy V Classic four one year.

This should have been the year for at least one of the schools to be in the Classic given he would have been 65 in March. With the Gaels expected to be a strong team, this would have been as good time as any to have a "treu" Jimmy V Classic with all four of schools playing.

I think an even bigger challenge for Gene is insuring that Cluess gets a better long term deal. Hofstra may want a more instant upgrade, and who knows what may happen at SJU (Lavin) where the Cluess family still has very close ties. Lavin was interviewed live during the SJU game last night and has been warned by his doctor to stay away from the excitement of game time.

My understanding is that Lavin is cancer free and is expected to fully recover. Just needs a good amount of time to regain his strength.

My point was that"things happen" and I want Cluess to know he's more than solid here "Cancer free" is a phrase used to describe the current status of the individual as it relates to the previous condition. It really does not fully describe the condition of the individual--especially with prostate cancer. I wish Lavin only the best. He's good for NY basketball.

This would have been a great year for Iona to play in the Jimmy V. classic; what can you do. Question for some of you guys who remember better than I. When Valving bolted to NC State, (I was still in high school) was there a lot, some or no bad blood between the school and him? They seemed to have done so much for each other, but I have always had the impression this was not an amenable split?

CJB--Watched the Jimmy V Classic being played in front of an empty MSG last night. Villanova was the only "local." I've tried previously to introduce your concept to the V Foundation people without success. I'll try again. While I'm at it, let me put in a plug for this worthy cause. My wife and I do some work with them. 100% of donations get used for cancer research projects. What better way to get into the holiday spirit than to remember the guy who put Iona on the national hoops map. Jimmyv.org

Oops...the point is that Marquette and Washington drew flies in the 2nd game at the Garden...the place was empty...imo an Iona vs. NC State game would have been more successful in putting fannies in the seats...wouldn't NC State have traveled better?...Iona vs. Rutgers would also be a natural NYC fit...both have built in NYC fan bases...well certainly better than either Marquette or Washington...and both have a direct connection to Jimmy V.

I have tried before and will try again. (May work on Vitale on this idea also.)

Thanks, Super.
Unfortunately, I believe it's ESPN that drives the matchups and they're probably looking at it from a national TV audience draw - not the fannies in the seats at MSG.
Still think representation from one of V's schools would fit very naturally into the mix with little erosion to viewership.
