He's a very solid coach. Anyone have any ideas on his contract length? We should immediately extend and lock him up if possible. If we can't I think we need to lock up Grasso.

I'm not sure. Like CJB, my take on Cluess from what I've read is that he doesn't want to uproot his family too much at this point. Unless there is a spectacular offer from Hofstra or the SJ's job opens up, I don't think he'll consider a lot of offers. Could be wrong, who knows what's in a guy's mind. But what job would realistically be offered that would cause him to move his family, or go without them? NC State? Illinois? those types of schools? Nah. North Carolina? Kansas? Kentucky? Not gonna happen. Butler or Gonzaga? Those guys probably won't leave unless they get spectacular offers. Seton Hall, Providence, Rutgers? Those aren't gonna open anytime soon, and honestly I think he's got a better chance at the NCAA's at Iona than at those schools. Wichita State? Murray State? Don't see it. Its all speculation. I don't think we can worry too much about it.

I know if a three quarters of/ or a million dollar a year contract comes my way I'm going with or without my family. (Even if its from Fordham or Siena ;D) I'd love to see the guy stay for a decade, but I fully expect any successful coach at Iona to move onward, it is what it is. I just hope Grasso is next in line when this happens.

Well Ghost, Fordham has Pecora in year 2 of a $750k contract, and unless they move to a new conference or make a commitment to succeed in the A-10 it appears that's simply a place to go to retire on the job. Siena is a good program, but would they pay $750k? and honestly, he could build a program just as successful at Iona or Manhattan as he could at Siena, imo. So the $$$ better be worth the move. Its not like he's got no or very young kids where he can just up and go without really effecting his family.
IMO you will not see Coach either uproot his family or uproot himself without his family regardless of the job offer. Of all the possibilities, I think the biggest threat comes from St. John's. If he gets an offer from St. John's, he goes. The question then becomes what is Lavin's position at St. John's. I have recently heard some rumblings (I emphasize this is rumblings that I have not been able to confirm) that Mrs. Lavin is not happy in New York and that she may be pushing hubby to use the illness as a reason to leave. If this happens, I would be shocked if Coach Cluess is not offered and does not accept. I hope that these rumblings are not well-founded and that Coach remains in NewRo for years to come. Regardless, I agree that Iona should be making every effort to keep Coach and his staff happy and well reimbursed for the great job they are doing!

This is a very interesting discussion but I think the title is wrong. This will not be up to Gene Marshall. I have it on good authority that Willard got $1 m per year for 5 years to go to Seton Hall. That money came directly from Alumni who wanted the horror show to end. Iona will have to do the same thing if it wants to keep Cluess. It may not be to that extent but if he can recruit and coach teams to win like this year, year in and year out, it will have an enormous positive impact on the school. I do not know who all of you are nor what your resources might be but anyone willing to contribute to such a fund should let Jim Hynes know sooner than later. If enough Alumni/ae commit than I am sure Jim can convince Joe Nyre to kick in to make it happen. That is what was done for Ruland after his big season (look what that did for us) but it will have to be on a whole different level.

That's why I made my remarks earlier in this thread.
Tim's contract is short in its term and $$$. Like many in his situation (not just coaching), he made some concessions to get a major opportunity for advancement. Now that he has proven his worth, he needs to be recognized with stability and $$$.

As one located far away from NY but aware of the geography, I ask this question in all sincerity.
It seems to be a given that if St. John's calls, Coach goes. I don't think we give Coach enough credit here. I see him as a person who has deep values and one who puts a premium on those who appreciate his values. How is Iona doing on this score?
For whatever reason, Coach did not finish his playing days at St. Johns. If all else is equal and it comes down to money, we lose. We can't ignore the money, but we may have to focus our attention on the intangibles. As a boss once said to me, if it's about money, you can make that in many ways and in many places. What else do we need to be talking about?
Don't disagree SLG. Let's "value" him. With 2 young kids looking ahead to college, $$$ will be a critical part of decisoin-making for a guy who got a late start on the earnings trail.

Bill it may not have read as I intended it to; but the Fordham, Siena line was just a joke.

SLG , unfortunately 99.9% of the time, with 99.9% of the people, money is the overwhelming value. Maybe Iona gets lucky and Cluess is in that .1%, but odds are against it
The full article in today's Daily News (not included in the web article) interweaves a few threads:
-Lavin's situation--which is clearly worse than previously described. (He had surgery in October.) -MAAC board crap about Cluess going to SJU. (See my earlier posts in this thread.) -Recruitment of big kid from Monroe who is now considering SJU
I'd really like the administration to step up big here and lock up Tim for a few years. I'm sure he would appreciate that.

I posted on the SJU board weeks ago that Lavin wasnt coming back this year(I got a hook on the SJU bench). They have been attacking me ever since, until that article in yesterdays paper. Also my boss's(sp?0 is a dean at St Johns and she said there are rumors on campus that hes gone for good. Things havent gone as planned for he and his actress wife and they want to go back to California. Lavin just lost his 2nd recruit for the 2012 class who just decommitted. Bang up job in Queens
Eugene mentioned one of his priorities is an upgrade of the facilities at half time. I would put this as the # 1 task. If we have a good facility, we'll get a good coach and attract players. We've always had success doing so.
The last Hynes upgrade was "entire student body" related. It fell short
