This may be a perfect time for the Iona students to resurrect the Bumpers Traveling Circus tee's.

"Lee surrenders at Garden film at 11"
"Two out of three ain't bad"
Those were funny shirts.
It would be nice to see the student section united and fired up.

shop.cbssports.com
search for "iona"
pretty solid selection...fast 3 day shipping and free if you order over 50$ worth of gear
Another GREAT site is prepsportswear.com ---tons of IONA gear men/women/children

Just be careful with those websites - I got some poorly made stuff from them - including a Jersey that had Gaels in extremely small letters on the front instead of large IONA lettering. I also assume none of it is licensed. I always wondered why Iona never really marketed any gear. Probably not enough of a market for the stuff.

"Lee surrenders at Garden film at 11" "Two out of three ain't bad" Those were funny shirts. It would be nice to see the student section united and fired up. For the NIT game at Rutgers, "Frankly Scarlet's, we don't give a damn" Great shirts and they came with a game ticket, bus ride and free keg of beer! For those youngin's who may be scratching their heads with this: Bumpers was a North Ave. watering hole owned by Iona alum Pete Ballo. During the early 80's, the bar would organize road trips and "pre-game warmups" for students and alum to support the Gaels. A ton of fun and each event included a unique "Bumbers Traveling Circus" tee shirt created exclusively for that event. The loud, well-lubed, "circus" would arrive en masse to the games to the astonishment of opposing teams and their fans. Great grass root support for the team!

Pete and his crew always did a great job with those events. Since the drinking age was 18 back then it wasn't very hard to fill the busses for games. You paid a few bucks and got the t-shirt and a ticket to the game + beer & transportation. That was a great deal.

This may be a perfect time for the Iona students to resurrect the Bumpers Traveling Circus tee's. The world, is a much sadder place without Bumpers. This is a fact

Oh the memories... Bumpers, Characters, Gary’s Barley Corn, The Church Key, Tammany Hall, and Piper's Kilt. I remember after home games in the early/mid-80's, the team would regularly convene at Tammany Hall for a post-game celebration. It all began to dry up as the drinking age changed from 18 to 19 in 1982 and further eroded in 1985 when the legal minimum age was raised to 21. Happy Hour after class was a ritual on Thursday's (and sometimes Friday's). Piper's Kilt had the best burgers and mozzarella sticks (extra crispy) anywhere!

Ah, "FREE" Keg Fridays on North Avenue. What a great way for a college kid to jump start their weekend. Some people always tried to gauge where the crowd would be the lightest figuring that the keg would last much longer there. If I remember correctly, the Gaelic Society also had free kegs on Thursdays once a month as well.

tau, it's been a number of years since I have been on campus, but when I visited the bookstore I found that they had more merchandise than was advertised on the bookstore site.
My memories of bar hopping in New Rochelle is limited to my junior and senior years. I transferred to Iona in my sophomore year, thinking I may have a vocation in the Christian Brothers, so I wasn't hitting bars that year. But in my junior year ('71-'72) and senior year ('72-'73) I more than made up for not contributing to the local watering holes in the prior 2 years.
We mostly did Georges, but spent time at The Beechmont, The Church Key and the VI (which was mostly a Veteran's CLub hangout). I am guessing that Bumpers was after my time.
I do remember going to the NCAA game against UVa. at the Meadowlands. Some of the IC students had tee shirts that said "Yes, Virginia there is an Iona" on the front and "And we're gonna kick your ass" on the back. Free throws, DAMN.
Go Gaels!!!

If I remember correctly, the Gaelic Society also had free kegs on Thursdays once a month as well. Jim Hynes, the major benefactor whose family name is on our "arena", was a great Gaelic Society president. We loved his once a month Thursdays! Lost track of Pete. Last I knew, he ran Marty Doyle's in Larchmont. Pete was a Vietnam Vet who frequented the VI before running it as Bumpers.
