Just dropped by to wish your team a safe journey to Huntington and let you know how much I've been looking forward to tomorrow's game. I honestly didn't know a lot about your team but the more I read the more I understand how much a quality victory this would be if we are fortunate enough to win. You've certainly garnered the respect of our fan base...at least the knowledgable ones.
This year's Herd team comes into the season with high expectations. We believe that if we can find some chemistry among our talent we could be in for a special season. However, that chemistry is a work in progress. The heart of our team is the returning senior point guard Damier Pitts. Pitts makes this team go and along with Dre Kane, last year's CUSA FPOY, will see the most floor time. We are joined by a host of talented newcomers. Making the biggest impact so far is a pair of JUCO forwards in Robert Goff and Dennis Tinnon. These two players have been exceptional. Tinnon led the nation in JUCO rebounding last year and has stepped into D1 play not missing a beat. These two players has led Marshall to a high national ranking in rebounding margin. As a team we out rebounded BE teams Cincinnati(victory) and Syracuse(loss) by double digits. Tinnon pulled 15 boards against the Syracuse zone, eight in which were on the offensive glass. These two kids go and get the ball.
Our center position has featured the 7'2 transfer from Marquette, Yous Mbao. He has filled in as starter until we get last year's center back, 6'10 Nigel Spikes. Nigel has been out with minor knee surgery and actually saw the floor against Syracuse for his first minutes of the year. Expect his floor time to increase tomorrow, but still not be where he will be down the road. Mbao is somewhat of a work in progress. At 7'2 he as had trouble staying out of foul trouble. He has shown flashes of the shot blocker we want him to be, but he can sometimes get scored on by quicker and smaller players. We hope for Spikes to see the floor more tomorrow.
We also bring in highly touted Freshman Justin Coleman. Originally signed with Louisville, Coleman failed entrance because of grades and sat out last season at Marshall as a prop. He is slowly working his way into the lineup. He has been very good defensively but has struggled at times on offense due to the rust. He can also get a little pouty when not seeing the floor as much as he would like.
Our matchup tomorrow seems to be a classic contrast in styles. You guys boast an extremely quick and athletic team that tops the nation in scoring(I think) and we boast a team that is more physical blue collar type of team. We haven't shot the ball very well this year at the foul line and beyond the arc. We will need to do so against Iona in order to win. We should have a crowd in the 7000 range that can get loud if the teams gives them a reason to.
I look forward to the game and wish you guys the best of luck.
