Super, I guess he earned it. But when his shot isn't falling, he doesn't (as of yet) bring much to the table. Kyle's game is much more complete, but he's in a terrible shooting slump. I'm hoping that Kyle starts on Sunday and Sean comes off the bench. Thought that Diggs played well and should have earned himself more PT. Am worried about Rashard James. Is there a reason his PT is so limited? Joe Mihalich has four VG freshmen and the team will be tough by the season's end, imo. And even more so next year. I think the reason his playing time is limited because, Scott, Momo, Kyle, Jenkins and Armand are better guards. Having 5 guys who are better in front of you will limited your PT.

Iona was very beatable in this game, they seemed undisciplined and it hurt them. Fortunate to win and moved to sole possession of 1st place.

I thought the Gaels looked very lethargic and almost disinterested last night.
I also think Cluess and Machado's quotes initially posted by Super in the other thread were dead on...
Cluess: "Not that they thought it was going to be easy but they thought they wouldn’t have a close game, either. As much as we tell them about that, they’re a little immature in that area and it’s really going to bite us if we don’t get better at that.”
Machado: “Randy is an animal,” Machado said. “He brings energy to this team. He likes to say, ‘Energy is energy.’ He’s an energetic guy. He’s like an X Factor for us.”
Randy's play sparked us and IMO was the game turnaround point in the second half.

Randy is an awesome athlete. I wonder how good he could be as a basketball player had he had good cocahing as he developed the fundamentals. His rebounding and those spin put-back moves are strong. I get nervous when he brings the ball up, or handles it for any time.

I was not impressed at all by our effort on Friday night. What troubles me most is that from the coaches to the players, no one seems to show much emotion when our play is so erratic. No one appears to step up and get pissed off.
If we are who we think we are, we definitely need some leadership.

listen Iona by my count had about 10 shots half way down or rim out during that game. The guys did what they had to do to get a W. Not for 1 moment did I think they were going to lose that game. I'm all for being ticked off and getting into people faces when it is warranted, but even though they were trailing a couple times I think good leadership was shown by remaining collective and getting the job done. The time for animation and expression was the 1st half of the Hofstra game, maybe if Iona is in a similar position again they handle it properly!

Niagara played a pretty darn good game, too. I don't think Iona played poorly or without emotion.

Points made, I hope you guys are right, I just didn't see it that way. I thought it was a pretty boring game with not a lot of flow and one in which we finally got some calls from the refs that could have gone either way at critical times in the second half.
Go Gaels.

While I wasn't impressed with last night's game, I believe Cluess and his staff are the best I have ever seen at Iona for teaching and trying to motive no matter if Iona is ahead or behind in games.
Some players are more of a challenge in dealing with than others. . .for instance Taaj Ridley has the worst body language (except for perhaps Mark Sanchez of the Jets) when things are going wrong and coaches are trying to help him. A suggestion for Taaj if you are constantly talking back to your coaches you can’t be listening and learning!
And how do you motivate Kyle Smyth to relocate his shooting touch?
My feeling is that the players and young people in general today have short attention spans and constant repetition of what you want is the only solution. And if you can’t get a player to listen, work hard and improve. . .then bench time is also a nice motivator.

Well said Old Coach. I thought Niagara did a good job of mixing up and disguising defenses, which had us out of our rhythm pretty much all night. We won nonetheless. Let's learn from this.
Also I can see where its hard not to think you're going to win against a team you beat three weeks ago at their place by 36. All I can say to that is remember St. Peter's and the MAAC championship? A team we beat twice during the season by an average of like 18 pts? We're gonna get everybody's best shot, pretty much every night. Beating us will make the season for some MAAC teams. Got to remember that.
