Iona offered Rockford East high school (Rockford, IL) Patrick Green. 6'8 275 PF/C. I couldn't find any information on other offers but I did find a video of the AAU team he plays on. Very raw player with a big frame. Averages 10 points and almost 8 rebounds a game this year. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES6iG24MYuU

Wondering if anybody knows if Iona is still recruiting Tim Rowe and Rokas Ulvydas from Mt. Zion Prep? was told by a person close to Mt Zion that they both might be making their commitments pretty soon.

There is no reason that we would have backed off of them so I would assume we are still recruiting them. We that said I doubt they are very interested in us if we just offered Patrick Green who is very raw. If we thought we had a good shot with some skilled bigs why would we be looking for someone who is a couple of years away from contributing?

Hmmmm, thought my question might stimulate some discussion amongst you diehards. My answer is unfortunately, it doesn't appear that way. I'm not being delusional, facts are facts. TC and his staff have elevated and maintained a Top 100 level doing a remarkable job. That said, one would think Iona would be a more attractive destination to high school recruits than it currently is. So what do I think holds them back? Facilities and a weaker MAAC.

Weaker compared to what?

Other conferences. Specifically, America East and NEC in this region who the MAAC used to be light years ahead of. Both have advanced themselves closer to the MAAC using facilities and slicker marketing/tv tactics. Quinny and Monmouth are now in the MAAC. Not saying these two are better, but they've cut their distance from the MAAC. When reading about high school recruits Iona may be involved with (and I realize what we read may only be a fraction of reality), I consider the ones also being recruited by the A10, CAA or BE as players of potential impact. Anything less is hard to get real excited about. I guess that's what prompted my original question - is Iona recruiting high school kids as the Top 100 program it is?

You're using a one-year sample to make your case.

You're using a one-year sample to make your case. Is Iona recruiting high school kids as the Top 100 program it is? I think it is tough to compare because the other teams immediately around us in the RPI rankings fluctuate from year to year so an apples to apples comparison is difficult. Since we only know about 33% of the offers we extend it is also hard to judge who we are really recruiting. I think that it would be safe to say that we are currently recruiting at an A10 level for the PG, SG and SF spots. In fact I think many of the SF's we are looking at are BE quality. As for the PF position I would say we are currently (Class of 2015) recruiting out of High School or Prep are at a MAAC level as landing bigs who have immediate impact is difficult for two reasons: 1) Very few bigs exist who could play in Cluess system effectively; 2) Those who could play in this system are usually grabbed by the BCS conferences. It is rare that we actually recruit a true center. We are looking for athletic PF's to fill our needs down low. I think that the players we have offered for that are 2016 PF's are of a higher caliber and are defiantly A10 or above caliber. I think Laury having a big year will help to attract more talented bigs who will recognize that Cluess system can showcase their skills and athleticism. Then again players like Armand, English and Casimir did not get many looks in high school and they worked out very well. I would not worry about the rankings as the staff seems to have a better handle on what fits their system than the rating services do regarding a players potential.

This. Cluess recruits to his system, not rankings.

As he should. No sense recruiting a player who does not fit system. Waste of time. I have been impressed by staff's ability to find under the radar talent. So far, so good.

As he should. No sense recruiting a player who does not fit system. Waste of time. I have been impressed by staff's ability to find under the radar talent. So far, so good. As I am also and of course you recruit to your system. That's a no-brainer. I believe the gist of my question is being missed. Let me try and re-phrase it this way... With some notable exceptions, a good number of impact players under TC's regime have been transfers and juco's. These players have been instrumental in raising the program to the Top 100 level the last few years. Not only have they succeeded on the court, but have earned their degrees as well. Yes, this staff has done an outstanding job finding "under the radar" talent. No argument there. But do you feel Iona as a Top 100 program is attractive to "above radar" high school recruits? So this takes me back to my initial question: Do you feel Iona recruiting high school kids as the Top 100 program it is?

No. But it really doesn't matter.
