As he should. No sense recruiting a player who does not fit system. Waste of time. I have been impressed by staff's ability to find under the radar talent. So far, so good. As I am also and of course you recruit to your system. That's a no-brainer. I believe the gist of my question is being missed. Let me try and re-phrase it this way... With some notable exceptions, a good number of impact players under TC's regime have been transfers and juco's. These players have been instrumental in raising the program to the Top 100 level the last few years. Not only have they succeeded on the court, but have earned their degrees as well. Yes, this staff has done an outstanding job finding "under the radar" talent. No argument there. But do you feel Iona as a Top 100 program is attractive to "above radar" high school recruits? So this takes me back to my initial question: Do you feel Iona recruiting high school kids as the Top 100 program it is? I think a facilities upgrade is badly needed CJB to make the kind of dent we hope to make in recruiting top HS players. Don't know if it is in the cards. I think our facilities hold us back for sure.

You're using a one-year sample to make your case. Is Iona recruiting high school kids as the Top 100 program it is? CJB, i asked the same question at the beginning of the year and was killed for it. I agree that we find plenty of the under the radar guys, but we still lose players to fordham, so its hard to blame the facilities on that one, i would think after all the success of the last 5 years we would have had one player commit to us that had offers from a slightly better program, especially a 6-8 type guy like laury who likes to handle the ball often

Just my opinion, but I see our recruiting in the following way: * We need a facilities upgrade. No surprise there. * At present we can't get top kids on the first go round, but by showing early love, we are often in the picture for kids that go to higher level programs, but then aren't happy there and want to transfer. * Sometimes we get VG kids just because they like our coaches. And sometimes lose them for the same reason, as other teams have good recruiters, also. I just happen to think that we have one of the best in all of college BB. He's not only a great recruiter but a very hard worker. * TC's style of play allows us to go after 'big men' in the 6'6-'7 range. Athletic guys taller than 6'7 are usually targeted by the BCS schools. * I'm guessing that come April we'll have a 'model' of our new arena to show potential recruits.

Fordham is a highly rated academic school. Like other things under our inept administration prior to this current one, our academic standing took a bit of a hit. The current administration gets that and we now see an effort as part of the capital campaign for endowed professorships and improved facilities in the areas of the business school and sciences. I truly think the school is poised to take advantage of its great location to raise its academic profile. Its a good school and a person can do well with an Iona degree, but Pecora is selling a Fordham degree like its a guarantee for success in life after college. Nothing is, but its a valuable degree and that cannot be disputed.

Thanks for elaborating. All great comments.
1970, you may have gotten "killed" by you asking a similar question because it was probably misinterpreted like I think mine was.
IC59, your point about finding athletic bigs over 6'7" that can play in TC's system being prime targets for BCS schools I believe is spot on.
This isn't a knock against our staff. It's just the opposite. They've done an incredible job in spite of being handicapped with (IMO) subpar facilities and a weaker MAAC.
This may already be done, but if I'm an Iona coach on a recruiting visit at a kids house, I bring copies of Iona's RPI standing the years TC has been coaching and use it as an independent source of how his program has been stacking up against the others. See how this programs strength is measured against all of D1 and the number of schools that are rated below Iona that have fancier facilities and play in stronger conferences.

Yes and I think you also bring a list of guys since Cluess and Grasso have been here who have honed their skills and had a shot at the NBA and are playing professionally: Scott, MoMo, Sean, Randy, Glove, Ridley, et Al. Guys who want to play after college do well to come here.

Sounds like his relationships with SJU and Rutgers could play a pivotal role in his recruitment.
Relationships are so important.
Talk to any coach and they'll confirm how vital establishing relationships are to successful recruiting.

I'm not really worried about the ones we lose or miss on. Please name one guy on the Fordham team you would take over Laury?

geg, i agree laury is better, but if we had someone to play with him, we would have had a ridiculous season

Each year a Div.1 team brings in a average of 1 to 4 new players. Over a 4 year period the entire team will change...Our Forum IMO being one of the most College basketball wise of all finds and indorses dozen and dozen of recruits usually with the ''Just right for Iona''...Rarely a day goes by, no matter how remote one is touted...Out of these dozen and dozen we have 2 true freshman (Casimir and Bebis) neither of which was much previously mentioned...One being probably the MAAC Freshman of the year, and the other showing much promise...Yet Over Cluess tenure he has brought in stellar brand of recruits...Right now we have 2 NBA prospects with a fast rising Williams and a coming star with Casimir...His past recruitment has been outstanding even though they may have not brought in from the suggested group, and others that were beyond our grasp.. With small college Iona's success and recognition, if that isn't enough to say a 'Job well done', then I offer this thought to the insatiable appetite... ''A teenager looks out his window on Christmas morning and becomes extremely disappointed when there is not a Brand New Car in the driveway as his Xmass present...'' As per phone call from friend, we are now a 11 point favorite...
