NCAA will keep Pelle from playing this year, according to a source. Next year, for us, is still in play, as is a JUCO, or an NAIA school, this year. Is there a possibility, if Jackson has left, of a mid-year transfer? Hmmn!!

Norvel is at Los Angeles College Preparatory Academy. Just saw that he is listed on their basketball roster. Hopefully, he will get the credits he needs to get cleared by the NCAA. On a less optimistic note, a tweeter said he was injured Saturday in the semifinals of the Coast2Coast Classic tournament in California and wasn't playing in Sunday's championship game. Here's hoping for a quick recovery!

Wow, interesting find. Just looked at their website. Over the years they have sent three players to Iona. Kenya Carruthers, Jermaine Matthews and Jermaine Smalls...at least according to their site. You guys would know better about those three players than I would. Would be amazing if Pelle were to get his academics in order and keep his commit to Iona.

KC and JS were less than positives. Don't remember JM. Then again, don't remember what I had for lunch.
Just figured out who you meant -- Leland Matthews. He was vg!

Is this a Prep school or a Juco? They list Kenya Carruthers and Jermaine Small as D1 transfers to Iona - which was then LA City College. Did the Junior College turn into a Prep school? losangelescollegeprep.com/d1transfers/

It looks to me like a prep school. Their site has a link expressing how it preps kids for college and guides them thru the college placement and NCAA compliance. without a doubt it is geared towards kids wanting to be student-athletes who have had issues getting qualified

I wish Norvelle the best with moving forward towards his goals. Hopefully he is following what Iona is doing this season and understands what a special team and coaching staff are accomplishing this year given the challenges. If he is able to become qualified this year hopefully he will become part of what I feel is a special program. He clearly understands the program is special when he committed to Coach Cluess after looking closely at a number of other larger programs. I am sure he will do what is right for him given the circumstances. Best wishes to Norvelle this season.

CJB, thanks. IMO, the following is obvious: 1. NP has great talent, and would bring a ton of shot blocking defense to the team. 2. In the game I watched he was sleep walking through the game and played with ZERO enthusiasm. Not surprising, since I'm sure he feels he has nothing to prove.

For more video use the website for the LA College Preparatory Academy www.losangelescollegeprep.com/schedule/ which has handheld video of several games played this January. I agree with ic59 in that he clearly did not standout other than his length. Great length and good release on free throws. Relied heavily on his athleticism defending the rim versus positioning. Hopefully he has a "motor" that works on both ends of the court and not only when he has the ball. Would have been nice to see him demand the ball with his skill set. I understand firsthand it is quite common for these players to play "down" to the competition they face.

Feel bad for this kid. He was really handled improperly. Probably being told not to worry about his books because he was going to be a one and done type kid. Now he playing on a team that has won one game so far and his numbers are bad. Would have love to see him come to Iona and develop but o'well the beat goes on.

Sad story that is unfortunately repeated way too often each year. The upgraded NCAA guidelines will make it even more difficult for kids like Norvel to ever play D-1. Lots of blame to go around but it usually starts with the family and the kids allowing bad influences into their lives. Almost every where they go, AAU, high school coaches and even the camps, there are plenty of good people telling these kids and their families what the NCAA guidelines are and what to, and to some degree, the type of individuals to watch out for. Most choose to listen and focus on grades as well as skills. Some choose not too listen. There is a great documentary from HBO on Lenny Cooke, a real eye opener for hot shot players. The NCAA should require every clearinghouse applicant to watch and take test on this film. It might prevent a few of these hot shot kids and their "teams" to realize, today there are no legitimate short cuts to play D-1 and even fewer if you actually think your good enough to play for pay.
