From the story: " The seven schools -- DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova -- are "close to a consensus on what they want to do next," a source said Wednesday" Wouldn't it be great if what they did next was include Iona? (wishful thinking) Although, at one time, we played many of them!

Call them the "Catholic 7". They'll be skimming the cream off the top of the A 10. No way Iona would be considered to join in that group. We're too small in terms of overall enrollment, facilities, and reputation.
Once this happens, expect the remaining A 10 members to realign. Many possibilities there, which may include some MAAC teams being asked to join the rump A 10, or depending on what the remaining A 10 schools do, some A 10 schools may be lookin for a new home. Many the western MAAC schools will pick up a new regional rival.
This will be very interesting.

My guess would be they'll stick with an all Catholic school conference concept and try to poach schools like: Dayton, Xavier, St. Joes and perhaps even Gonzaga.
If that happens, it'll be interesting what the ripple effect is on the A10, CAA, MAAC. I like the MAAC the way it is and after witnessing what happened to Fordham and Lasalle after their departures always thought that was Iona's rightful place. Now with all this happening and talk about Monmouth and Wagner joining the league, I'm not sure it may remain the best place for Iona.
Ironic how Big East basketball became as big as it did and launched football because of television (particularly ESPN), and now it's football and television that's tearing it apart.

I thought that St. John's indicated that it was headed to the ACC as a BB only school. Did I misread that?

It's ashame to see the Big East get destroyed like this; as mush as I hated that conference, is as much as I loved it.

St. johns a mid-major? OUCH!!! Not really with Gonzaga, Butler(just beat UNC and IU),and VCU joining the Catholic seven. Throw in Xavier, St. louis, Creighton, and Umass for the TV market and thats really not a mid-major league. Might even be better for SJU then if the ACC decides to take us as a non-football school, as has been discussed, to balance off the addition of Notre Dame as a basketball only school. (They have an odd 15 now, plus it gets them into NYC and MSG).

Anyone know why we weren't invited to the big east when it first formed in the 80s? Seems like we would've been a logical choice at that time given our success in the late 70s/early 80s.

Iona lost to UPenn (which went to the Final Four) in the first round at NC State when Dave Brown was seriously injured. SJU received an at-large and won it first 2 games, including defeating Duke also at NC State. Louie controlled MSG, so SHU was invited instead of Iona.

Another reason, Dave Gavitt, first BE Commissioner, was AD (I believe) at Providence and offered Valvano the HC job at Providence. JV would have been a natural in that heavily Italian city, but Jimmy dared to dream, and Gavitt didn't like that. So between Louie and Gavitt we didn't have a chance. And the BE, based on our facilities, or lack thereof, made the correct decision. Our real 'downfall' as a Metro NYC power could also be traced to Westchester County Supervisor Andy O'Rourke's decision to NOT build a new County Center, instead going with a, "fresh coat of paint" approach. B/t/w, Andy was/is a Fordham grad. Must be something about Fordham people not liking new BB facilities.

As a side note to the formation of the Big East, it was said that Dave Gavitt bumped Holy Cross in favor of Boston College. Not sure how accurate that was, but at the time Holy Cross was one of the most powerful basketball programs in the Northeast.
