If you thought my other crazy idea was crazy, then you'll probably love this crazy idea. Drawing conclusions from just one game, but here's what I've got:
*MVP-DL, since we don't have another big body, who is 'ready' to play significant minutes. And he is a double-double machine. *Important pieces but not "go to guys", Bowman, Poole, and Armand. Armand and Bowman can break open any game if they get hot, and IF we have a PG who recognizes this and gets them the ball. Poole who had a poor first game but does have the versatility to play different positions. *Go To Guys-IMO, we only have two on our roster, with a third a possibility. And unfortunately, one of the two,Kelvin Amayyo, is sitting out. I'm hoping that while he didn't show it on Saturday, that AJ English will develop into that type of player. But right now we're left with Isaiah Williams. And while he had a poor shooting game (3-11/2-8) he showed me that he has the skills to shoot from long range, and also take it to the rim. The BIG QUESTION is how long will it take for him to fit into the TC syatem? *MIP-As most of us knew going into the season PG play would make or break us. And the CSU game proved that correct. The most disappointing thing about the PG position was that DeShawn Gomez didn't get a chance to play. Was he injured? No one seems to be saying, but it doesn't seem that he was, judging by Greg's comments who was at the game. Sledge played 30 minutes and had only two assists. Can't win with that. And at the end of the game he tried to take it to the basket, a la MoMo. Our walk on, Britton Williams looked comfortable at PG and he had two assists in only eight minutes. We'll go as far as our point guards take us.
Like I said such an early take is another crazy idea, but it gives everyone else a chance to give their opinions.

My opinion is you shouldn't waste this much gray matter drumming up crazy ideas based on the results of one game. :-D

Guy, we all have opinions about the team and for the most part they are based on what they saw on Saturday. By puting my thoughts out there, I was hoping that others would reply with what they agreed or disagreed with. I understand that you didn't see the game, weren't at MTG or didn't see any pick up games over the summer so this is all new (The '13-14 Gaels) to you. But there are a lot of posters who have seen the team in action and I'm hoping that they will respond.

IMO the vast majority of Iona fans on this board have realistic views...Deep inside our basketball portion of the brain we understand exactly where Iona stands and its strong and weak points...But...In sports you root...To be constantly reminded of this shortcoming is unnecessary...Please don't attempt to take the ''Hope springs eternal'' from our sport world...There is little joy without it...It would take more than a ''Quick Reply'' section to list the many times the ''Big Boys'' were knocked from their perches by those of the sports world Iona lives in.......

I watched the game and will share my thougts for what they are worth, conversation pieces if anything.
1. The team is very small and will have to rely on perimeter shooting more than 50% of the time.
2. Laury can get a double/double everygame and will have to for us to compete.
3. Defense will have to make stops which brings up another varible/obstacle which is the tenacity they play with and the overzealous fouls being called this year. We aren't deep enough on the bench to allow quick foul problems.
4. We will be out rebounded in many games.
5. Coach has to learn when to call timeouts to offset opposing runs instead of waiting on media timeouts.
6. Players; Laury will have to stay physical and assertive. Look to the permiter sometimes for your spot up shooters. Also be confident at the free throw line because he's going to get fouled. Sean will have to keep the defense honest by looking off the dribble as well. They all know he can stroke it and they are looking to take that option away. AJ will have to be a scorer whether spotting up, slashing or off the dribble. Poole has to be aggressive looking to attack for mid range or assists to others (not real sure how consistent his jump shot is). Sledge must look to be a pass first guard and control the tempo of the game. Has the tendency to attach the trees to frequent without finishing consistantley enough for me. He should know to look to dump the pass where the help defender came from. Bowman will have to serve as a conduit and score, rebound and play defense. Gomez has to get off the bench or out of the doghouse, whatever it is. We can use his knowledge, effort and skills on the floor. Williams will have to continue to be a force on the perimeter and crash the offensive and defensive boards. He is long enough to score others ways as well and I was impressed at a few block he had vs Cleveland State. Ellis could be used as well but not sure why he wasn't there or when he will return. The rest of the players are very RAW and fresh out a high school program. It will take some time for them to get used to playing basketball at the highest level day in and day out. Sadly missed this year............Amayo. Could use that frame in the paint for sure.
7. When you see these guys in person, you will see that they aren't real physical in stature. I wish they would have put some pounds on a few of them. Bowman looks to be the most tuned up since last year, however Laury is down a few necessary pounds. I know that once the season starts, weight training sometimes doesn't get the same attention but for this team maintenance in the weight room is a must I think for the physical demands of the game and to help with injury prevention.
8. Overall I think they will gel for a MAAC run but there is some work to be done.
Go Gaels

Nothing that was seen in practices, at MTG or vs Cleveland State has any bearing on March. Hell, it doesn't even have any bearing on December.

Guy, who is talking about March? I'm talking here and now. As you get older, you'll learn to live, "here and now". I'm hoping/expecting that the team will change/improve as the season goes along. But to measure improvement, it's good to have a starting point. And while I expect an offensive explosion this Saturday, I'll have to wait for our next away game (and I don't mean Kansas) to see how we're doing. JMUO.

The point is that we already have seen plenty of established patterns under Cluess, the most overarching being we've always been pretty happy come March. Nothing wrong living in the here and now, but you seem stressed by this approach with regard to our beloved Gaels. Enjoy the ride!

Stressed, me? Of course, but my Psych tells me to talk/post about it. And it works.

all posters have to understand that Guy is the voice of reason...some get too high when we win and some get too low when we lose...and he always sets us all back on the right path...lets all settle down (myself included) and look forward to another season of really good mid-major basketball....

It was a game that should have been WON. PERIOD. It was a 20 point lead.
The good Siena teams never lost games like that. We should be no different.

Anyway, take all these feeling and bottle them up for the loss in the first round of the NCAA's in 2014. We will have a 15 point lead going into the second half, the opposing team will make adjustments and ...... rinse repeat rinse repeat.
You can't play street ball for 40 minutes.
