We've played a lot of high major teams over the years, but the basketball message board is a relatively recent phenomenon. Last spring during the tournament we were treated to the spectacle of dozens of imbeciles who root for Ohio State invading our board, many of whom could barely put together an English sentence. One 15 year old (at least I hope he was 15) kept posting pictures of adults and children with Down's Syndrome. Another guy, not satisfied with his number 8 nationally ranked Buckeyes playing a 15 seed in a home game, felt the need to engage in phychological warfare with us in an attempt to eliminate any hope we had. And all we had was hope. There were a couple of decent guys, though, in all fairness.
The Kansas fans appeared to take a more passive-aggressive approach, lurking on our board and cherry picking comments to post and ridicule on their own board. At least it was less intrusive and there were no pictures of kids with Down's syndrome. The comments on their board belie a smug haughtiness though that went beyond Ohio State. The OSU fans appear to regard basketball as another way to enjoy football. The Kansas fans appear to regard basketball as something they own, and let the rest of us use on occasion.
What is similar to the two, however, based on the comments, is that they don't merely enjoy watching their teams beat their opponent, but they need us to regard their teams with complete awe and admit they are the greatest thing that ever happened to college sports. Apparently, we are crazy and not allowed to believe our team can upset their heroes and if any of our players say they expect to win such a game they are disrespectful trash talkers. This part I don't understand. Why the need for adoration if your team is so superior and you know it?
