There is a lot of discussion here about the Iona doghouse and the players who may reside there. I even heard some banter about that in the Hotel Lobby in Lawrence, KS.
I can, without reservation, tell you guys that not one of the Iona players, male or female is in the doghouse. What is my source, you ask? Me! Hear me out!
I was in the Iona doghouse at Phog Allen Fieldhouse for the entire KU game, and there was not a single Iona player there. Other than me, my three guests and a couple other Iona alums, the doghouse was empty. Noone, Nada!
I responded to the Iona Alumni/KU shindig Invitation by buying four tickets to the KU game and pre-game reception at $75.00 a pop. – a $300.00 investment. I was all excited to get to the reception, and get together with other alums and harass the refs as EP and I did in Charlotte back in 2006. Anyway, I met super and several others at the Pre-game Reception. One of my guests is a KU alum (not Dr. Nyre), and he brought his 16 year old son, who is being heavily recruited for baseball, to an Iona game. In fact, he had spent the early afternoon touring the KU baseball facilities with the KU baseball staff. They were well aware that Dennis Leonard and Jason Motte are Iona alums. My other guest is a business partner, and comes from a high profile successful St. Louis/New Jersey family.
Judging from the Reception attendance, it seemed like there would be more than 30 of us in the Iona section at the game to make the Iona presence heard. My KU friend had a VIP Allen Fieldhouse parking pass (compliments of KU Baseball), so we went ahead of the Iona bus to Allen Fieldhouse.
WE found our seats, so high in the Fieldhouse rafters that (and this is literal) there was padding on the steel roof tresses so that we would not get a concussion if we stood up during the game. I switched my 6’ 4” friend over one seat so that he would not bang his head on the roof or sit through the game hunched over. As pregame Allen hoopla wound down, we were looking forward to our Iona compatriots filling the seats around us.
At tip-off about three other people showed up, but none of my new friends from the Reception. Holy sxxt, did the bus break down on the way over?
Well slg did not earn his stripes as a member of the Ixxxxs On North Avenue lightly, it slowly dawned on me that we were in the doghouse, and God knows where the rest of my Iona compatriots are. It also occurred to me that this probably sealed the deal for Mac playing baseball at KU – “my Dad, me, his hot-shot, well connected Iona Friend , etc. are all sitting in the Iona doghouse, with empty seats all around us in an otherwise packed Allen”. There was not a single Iona player, even though there was lots of pine around us awaiting their presence.
Hmmmmm??
