About 30-35 years ago the team called Loyola Marymount was the rage and talk of the basketball world...Its Coach was Paul Westhead who cared absolutely nothing about defense...They averaged over 120 points a game, but lost almost every time they met a team of consequence...He insisted that they shoot within 7 seconds...It was fun to watch, but eventually the fans tired and yearned for victory... Are we becoming the L.Marymont of the this century...Our defense is non-existent and we appear oblivious to basketballs basic fundamentals...We have trouble getting the ball inbounds...We seldom get a loose ball...We are rebounding without energy and off and running without a plan of attack...We seldom get a steal...IMO we are devoting to much time to basketballs offensive to the expense of defense...A change in this mode of thinking would be welcome before we follow the fortune of Loyola Marymount... We are like a business with a good product but little profit...

OT, a vg point, but rmember that the team, like the season is young. With exams over the team will be able to get in more practice time. And before you know it, we'll be able to inbound the ball. And remember our defense is improving. Cosider: 1. SBU scored 102 points (on the road). 2. Dayton held to 96 points (at home).
If that trend continues, Nevada will ONLY score ninety, and that won't be enough to beat us.
But seriously, I have a lot of confidence that TC and his staff will figure it out. I think we ALL agree that three of the five starters should be DL, SA, and AJ. The other two are up for grabs and going into the MAAC season we'll know who the last two will/should be. Throwing in my own two cents, I'll remind everyone that last night, DaShawn Gomez had five assists/zero TO's in only seven minutes of play. And I'm not saying he should start, but am saying that he should get more than seven minutes of PT.

it was about 25 years ago and they beat many good teams---IONA ONLY WISHES THEY COULD HAVE A RUN LIKE LOYALA MARYMOUNT -in 1990 they made one helluva run in the ncaa tourney.. they beat new mexico state in first round -they beat the defending national champions' Michigan in the next game by 34 points! -then they beat Alabama in the sweet 16 to go to the final 8 -they lost to eventual; champion U.N.L.V. in their bid to make the final 4!
AND THEY DID THIS ALL AFTER LOSING THEIR VERY BEST PLAYER TO A HEART ATTACK (HANK GATHERS)

It was a new system of basketball, and it caught the basketball world by surprise...It worked for a while, but when the coaches learned how to deal with it, Loyola of Marymount went into oblivion, and has seldom been heard from again... I had a friend who stated after watching the game at my urging stated ''Iona plays defense like a macaroni strainer holds water''...It was a keen observation...

It was hard to watch Dayton's players slice through our zone get to the rim miss the shot and then get the rebound and score. The reaction of the Iona players to all this was to raise their arms over their heads in exasperation with befuddled expressions on their faces. All this combined with an overall lack of intensity has me concerned. This team has real athletic ability so they should be able to play defense. It takes desire to play on the defensive end of the floor. Desire and hustle will take you places where talent alone won't get you. Hopefully this team will come to realize this and start to play with the effort needed to be a top team in our league. An old coach of mine said what you do when you don't have the ball is just as important as what you do when you have it.

Saw one of those games on ESPN classic recently against Oregon State. The score was 84-80 at halftime.

I watched this game and it also took me back to some West Coast Basketball in the 70-80's. I was surprised of how apparent our lack of fundamental defense was vs Dayton. When I was watching, our up top switching seem fine. However, when Dayton isolated a player on one side he faked and seemed to have an open lane all the way to the basket.Red Holtman would have a few chice words for that defensive committment. Looking back @ the St. Bonnie game it's clear Dayton watched that game. I'm not sure if Iona did.
