86, i agree but if he isn't going to play someone like that because it doesn't fit the offense why bother recruiting him? Is pelcher out for the year? No... Pelcher has a lower leg injury but I think they are hoping to get him back in a couple of weeks. I think the staff needs to adjust a bit... especially if we are going to continue playing zones. A big who can jump and block shots can be a huge asset for the transition offense. The transition has to start somewhere... better off of a blocked shot or a rebound then an inbound pass.

I think the staff is trying to solve that problem. While Hines is more of a 4 and plays a lot on the perimeter he is 6'10'' and not afraid to play aggressive and will only improve on the boards. There is also Robinson who I feel has great potential and was showing signs of being aggressive blocking some shots and playing with more confidence before he got hurt. Hopefully he gets back soon because I believe Hines and Robinson will contribute in MAAC play.

Hines has exceeded expectations thus far and Robinson had the injury setback. Since the competiton will be weaker for the most part, it is a chance to build confidence.

I love Hines and agree that Robinson has a lot of upside. I would still take another true athletic big instead of wasting the scholarship on a SG/Sf that will never see time. Rumors have us chasing additional bigs this year so I would just add this kid into the mix. My first preference would be Michael Nzei even though he is only 6'7" as he can jump and is a rebounding machine. I like Aleer Leek but he is not as rugged inside.

I love hines, but I think we probably recruited him because he plays offense, and will be pleasantly surprised that he will rebound, hope he keeps playing more, laury and hines can definetly play at the same time and will help rebounding

86 I agree, an athletic 6-7 will probably play more than a bigger banger, which I can live with if the 6-7 kid at least tries to rebound block shots and get dirty

All good points but I think that finding a big at 6'10 who can walk and chew bubble gum at the same time with some basketball ability is tough for a mid major like Iona since you are competing with the bigger conference schools who most kids will commit too just because of the program or conference. On the flip side, if they do not pan out and end up on the bench we may get a shot at them later when they hit the transfer list, but its tough initially. (We had to leave the United States to find Hines)
Coaches know you have to have BIGS who can control the paint or at least alter shots with their presence down there trying to block shots and rebounding the ball. Remember the Kansas game and most recently the Quinny game. Bigs are important at this level and above. Guards are a dime a dozen and 6'7 athletic wings, and I am using the word "athletic" in a very serious context, are also hard to land at this level. I think the coaching staff knows this which is a big reason why we have recruited out of JUCO's and transfer type players. Also, Cluess's reasoning could be that since he cant get the higher caliber BIGS, he will recruit a guard orientented plethora of players for his system in the hope of outscroring and outrunning the opponent. A system that has brought him success at every level ARE facts that we can't debate.
Although, many of us are experiencing some consternation, I agree with a word from Guy, "spoiled." As the season continues I am sure there will be a maturation process by all, even us as there is every year. Game plans and personnel will change and I have all the confidence that we will fair well and hopefully repeat success in the MAAC tourney.

I am not spoiled.... just give me three McDonald's All Americans in each recruiting cycle and I will be satisfied.... not happy, just satisfied.
