>:(It appears endless the hypocrisy the NCAA displays regarding "student athletes". I bring this issue to this board with the fiasco over Devonte Graham not being able to be released from his Letter of Intent (LOI) by Appalachian State University Coach Jason Capel. Graham currently plays at Brewster Academy, just down the road from me. He is quality player who has changed his mind, but cannot get his release. Not even with restrictions on where he cannot play. Without the release the NCAA could enforce his having to sit for two years before playing somewhere else with 3 years of eligibility remaining. Sounds crazy. There is no genuine concern for the student athlete by the Coach or the NCAA. It is about control and money.
Jay Bilas and others have criticized the NCAA over the issue of how the NCAA and the universities benefit financially from the student athletes without their being compensated. The Ed O'Bannon lawsuit could change that current situation. Funny how in most states the highest paid state employee is the state university football or basketball coach. Remember the flack Calhoun got over his pay at UConn. Bilas and others have also commented on the NCAA inconsistent policies regarding granting hardship waivers, tranfers and releases from Letter of Intent (LOI). Iona has somewhat benefited from this inconsistency with the waivers granted for Momo Jones, Tavon Sledge and Mike Poole. Unfortunately, Kelvin Amayo was not granted his waiver to play this year even though he was apparently "sold a bill of goods" by Coach Herrion at Marshall University. Coaches are given all kinds of latitude without repurcussions from the NCAA. They can hold players hostage when they want to transfer by placing restrictions on where. The scholarships are not guaranteed for 4 years, but renew each year. There is talk of changes, but I do not believe that the student athletes will become empowered. I fully expect that the NCAA and coaches will remain in complete control and power.
I hope that there will be modifications to the whole LOI process. The athletes should not become formally committed to the academic institution until they are accepted by the school and they accept their financial aid/scholarship package. Just my 2 cents and the need to rant.
