great game great atmosphere great win chels, not sure your of your point about sean not being the leader, sean took a 3 , not a deep 3 it was from the corner. sean calms aj down during the game when he gets a little to excited and goes into the momo zone. also sean has the ball a lot less than aj and has the same amount of assists. sean talks to everyone during the huddles and i think is unquestionably the leader of this team. also as a senior doesn't ever argue with the coach like all the other players and as a senior has not ever gone shot crazy as we have seen by others in the past and has no problem sharing the spot light with aj who is a soph. also poole stepping up his game can now take more of a leadership role on the defensive end with his experience at playing at a higher level

I feel last night was a coming of age moment with the team as a whole. They did not panic when Manhattan went on their run in the second half. They showed patience and confidence in themselves and each other. Mike Poole when given an opening took it last night. His body language reflects his confidence. Love seeing players clapping their hands when on defense just asking/begging their opponent to "bring it". Also I did not see many "reach fouls" as we made the effort to move feet to be in position defensively. First half was just what I wished for "Fast and Furious", as we did not allow Manhattan to control the tempo. My concern is the short bench due to apparent injuries. My worst fear is that Ryden is gone and Tavon is not fully recovered to play meaningful minutes. Any one who doubts Coach Cluess needs to look closer to how they prepare the team and players of the course of the season. In my opinion the early season games are lab experiments where they test rotations and situational play. If the players were questioned after the season I am sure we find that Cluess and his staff are constantly talking to each individual about their development and how they can succeed over the long haul, not to focus too much on each individual game. Great win! Pray for good health down the stretch!

Last night in the chat room I said that this game had a tourney feel to it and I wished that I could have been there. I was so impressed with Iona's intensity and the fact that they didn't buckle after MC went on a 13-0 run from the end of the first half/beginning of the second half. DLIII was outstanding. When he made that lefty shot off the backboard and the +1 all I could say was, "Lord!". Last night's performance should really help his overall confidence and renew his confidence in his FT shooting. Mike Poole played like a man possessed and I was once again amazed that IW seems to be everywhere.
Sean Armand is definitely the leader of this team. I love this young man and have since I watched his "Armand TV" video from PR (?) a few years back. He is an intelligent, hard working, and a charismatic kid. I still show the picture he took with me at last season's Loyola game to people. His game is multidimensional now - his hard work continues to pay off.
Folks may say that AJ makes mistakes, but he's young. His back to back 3s in the second half to give Iona the lead were clutch. We are fortunate to have him. Gomez quietly brings it every time he is on the court. He seems to have a calming effect, plays good defense and point is a guard and can pass well and knock down the 3. I don't know about dog-houses, but we need Tre and Sledge. Both are solid athletes and we need them.
It's always sweet to beat the Jaspers and it was fitting that we did so in front of a great crowd on a night we honored Richie Guerin. What a class act guy he is.
Go Gaels!!!

My point was that as a leader and senior he shouldn't take a three from the corner when you are up 7 with 1:35 on the clock and 30 seconds left on the 35 second clock. Do you agree or disagree? My other point was that AJ had more than a minimal impact on the game. Do you agree or disagree? Those were my points.

“We want to be where they went. We want what they’ve had,” Manhattan coach Steve Masiello said. “We’ve got to take it from them. I’ve said it all year, Iona’s the defending champions. Someone has to dethrone them and it hasn’t been done yet. We didn’t show we could do that tonight.” nypost.com/2014/01/31/iona-slugs-manhattan-in-pitched-maac-battle/

i'll take him shooting an open 3 from the corner, not a deep 3 like you stated any time aj forces a lot more shots than sean but i do agree aj had more than a minimal contribution, just wish he wouldn't go into momo mode sometimes, on this team if you are open you WILL get the ball back

I re-watched the 3 to make sure I saw it correctly. He was not open, and he was very close to out of bounds. Even if he were open, you NEVER take that shot with the time left in the game and the shot clock. I believe Sean is really good and smart, he just made a mistake.

having the benches on the other side as well as the cameras changed the whole look of the arena on TV….it was great to see… Agreed. In the past our half court logo on TV was upside down...

Just a general comment about Iona basketball and our coach TC. Please bookmark this thread and read it the next time folks feel the need to criticize coach. I nearly threw a party the moment TC was hired. Having played against his St. Mary's teams in high school over four years I knew what he was all about and the style of play he was going to bring t the school. He's always going to be a winner at Iona and that's the way it's gong to be. End of story. Enjoy the ride. The Cluess is loose!!

I think every fan finds faults with coaches, and he does some things that a fan can easily disagree with, but I have to admit Cluess is an offensive genius, and when all is considered we probably can not have a better coach.

Things in this thread, at least a few of them, that I agree with: 1. 05's bottom line assessment of the game. 2. QS's reminder of the quonset huts and the Cardboard Collesium, great memories. And you could have thrown in the handball courts. And even the tennis courts. 3. Oarsman's "The Cluess is loose". I like it. 4. SA has great leadership skills, but his missed three was a BIG mistake. 5. AJ continues to make lazy passes, and they have to stop. But at crunch time, I want him taking the big shot. He's a stone cold killer. 6. The Admin. did a great job on the entire night.

With the way things are going for Lavin at SJU, I really don't like "The Cluess is loose!"

cluess will always be a winner at Iona, but he still needs a signature win, i still remember not being able to get out of my seat for half an hour after the BYU game, and without the depth of having size we aren't exactly in great shape with our roster the rest of the year- we have 1 kid left over 6-6 for the rest of the year if your goal is to win the maac he is the perfect coach, if your goal is to be able to at least hang with the big boys in a game during the season or in the dance, he still needs to tweak some things but all in all we are in good shape having him and grasso, lets not forget the recruiting grasso has done
