Iona Hall of Famer, Joe Tighe passed away, the other day, and the Gaels have lost one of their "greats". Joe was also responsible for naming the Iona booster club, The Goal Club. At 6'6 he was considered a big man on the BB team, when he played from '56-60. And when you think about it, the current Iona starting center, Mike Poole is also 6'6. But Joe was also one of the toughest players to ever wear Maroon and Gold. At the end of his life he had a full head of white hair, but back in the day, his hair was red, more fitting for his tough style of play. He was also a vg football player, even though Iona didn't have a football team. After graduation he played DE for a semi-pro team, The Westchester Crusaders, as part of their, "half ton of fun" DL. They played their home games in Mt. Vernon, at Memorial field. He will be waked today (6-8) and tomorrow (2-4/6-8) at the Leo Gallagher Funeral Home in Greenwich, CT with his funeral mass Saturday at 11AM at St. Augustine's in Larchmont.
May he RIP.
