Curious to hear the board's thoughts on the Northwestern ruling and whether or not we're going down a path where student athletes will soon be paid to play?

The NLRB is notorious for overstepping its bounds. I haven't read the ruling. If I had to guess I think it gets overturned.

Slippery slope. If it happens College football and basketball will basically become a minor league system. It will also kill non-revenue sports and will hurt mid majors the most. The haves will have more and the have not will have less. If this happens it will destroy college sports.

86, i agree, majors and mid majors, will probably be 2 different divisions, since we wouldn't be able to pay as much

This has more to do with other shifts in society even though the press keeps focusing on the NCAA's earnings, the players and a few greedy attorneys. Take these comments and digest them:
"Of course they should be able to organize," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told The Washington Post. "The way these people are treated by the NCAA and the universities themselves is really unpardonable, and I wish them well. I'll do anything I can to help."
Last October, the Drake Group -- an association of college faculty members from around the country -- proposed the "College Athlete Protection Act" that would restructure the NCAA under congressional authority.
"We can't give an antitrust exemption to the current NCAA," said Allen Sack, a professor at the University of New Haven, a Notre Dame football player in the 1960s sand a member of the Drake Group. "We would never do that. It would be insane. They're the ones who created all of these problems."
For those who do not know, the Drake Group , an association of mostly liberal college faculty members from around the country, last October proposed the "College Athlete Protection Act" that would restructure the NCAA under congressional authority. The Drake Group wants an NCAA board of directors with independent directors not currently employed by universities, such as former presidents, trustees, athletics directors, faculty and athletes. These assholes want to gain through this proposed bill by attaching it as an amendment to the 1965 Higher Education Act, which helps subsidize universities so this socialized model is going to have the ability to cut money off to the schools if they push back. Total control through government regulation. So this sounds like a free market idea to compensate talent, it is really a cover for further government overreach and control.

If colleges are going to pay athletes beyond the $200,000 or so of tuition, room and board, here's a suggestion for the liberals in Congress. You pay the athletes directly and let them choose what college they want to go. You can't discriminate on the basis of race, religion or gender. Schools that make money on their athletic departments would have to repay the salaries of athletes up to a max of their sports earnings. Those colleges that don't make money won't have to repay the government. In no case will this be considered a funding of the college by the government. Now, representatives and senators, explain this to your constituents who would have to pick up the cost. Good luck!
