Anyone else see some similarities between coaching styles of Tim Cluess and Greg Popovich? The similarities I see are as follows: 1) Hold players accountable, no nonsense 2) Tight lipped 3) Defends players when needed 4) Loyal to players, staff and institution 5) Consistent 6) Selfless, defers recognition
These traits I feel are keys to successful effective leadership and instill loyalty in his staff and players. As stated previously we very fortunate to have Coach Cluess not only for his on court success, but also his representation of the college and the role model for his players and staff. Classic example of "what you see is what you get". Polar opposite of a coach at another MAAC institution.

gregcrow, have you been watching the NBA Finals? They are setting a points differential record and shooting percentage off the charts. Great ball movement with the extra pass. Very efficient offense. Very reminiscent of Iona when playing the way Cluess intends. Defense is where we differ. The Spurs are pros on D and Iona is not. Expecting we will continue to see other MAAC teams try to replicate Cluess' style of play. I will be shocked if the new Marist Coach does not have a similar philosphy.

From ICGaels (6/10/14)
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Iona College men's basketball team was declared the NCAA Division I statistical champion in three-point-field goals per game for the 2013-14 season, as officially released by the NCAA Statistics Department.
Iona's 10.24 three-pointers per contest ranked first ahead of Creighton (10.17), Charleston (9.7), Princeton (9.3) and Eastern Kentucky (9.3). The Gaels finished second in three-pointers made, connecting on 338 shots from the outside.
Iona was the only NCAA Division I team to have four players connect on more than 60 three pointers. Belmont, Duke, IPFW, and Winthrop were the only other schools to have three or more players with 60+ three-point field goals. Additionally, only two other schools (Mt. St. Mary’s and Fresno State) had four players hit 45 or more three pointers.
Since head coach Tim Cluess took the reigns of the program in 2010, Iona has finished 24th (8.1), 51st (7.7), 14th (8.3), and 1st (10.3) respectively in the nation in the category.
Overall, the Gaels hit 10 or more three-pointers in 20 of their 33 contests, highlighted by 17 trifectas vs. Marist on Dec. 4, and 15 at Siena on Jan. 12. Sophomore A.J. English connected on a team-high 8 three-pointers at Dayton on Dec. 19.
Senior Sean Armand finished second in the MAAC with 96 three-pointers and shot just over 44% from the outside. Armand ranks first all-time in both categories. Sophomore Isaiah Williams ranked fourth in the MAAC in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 42.7% of his attempts. The Gaels had four players in the top 10 in the league in three-pointers made in Armand, Williams, English, and senior Tre Bowman.
Following two seasons as the national leader in scoring offense, the Gaels finished the 2013-14 campaign fourth overall in the category. The Maroon & Gold are the only team to finish in the top five each of the last three seasons, and the only squad in the country to average over 80 points per game each of the last three years. Iona was also the 2011-12 national leader in assists per game at 19.3 per outing, with then senior Scott Machado leading the way with a NCAA best 9.9 assists per game.
