For me, I don't see the 'love' for Siena in the regular season, but naturally the tournament in Albany is another question. I'm just surprised that four coaches voted Siena first and not one voted for Manhattan. Is it politics? Is it an anti-Masiello vote? Or am I just wrong about the Saints? (Now these are views I want to read).

This is all great promotion for the league but as 86 points out it doesn't mean a damn thing

They are the trendy and easy pick as they return the entire team. In my opinion they return quantity rather than quality.

ctbill, I think, in a way, it does mean something, assuming these are 'honest' votes. The coaches do this for a living and fans do it for fun. So maybe the coaches see things (I'm sure they've scouted where the other MAAC teams are in the offseason) that we don't. But I do think that they missed on Manhattan.

Siena has a few things working for them. Patsos is a good coach who gets a lot from his players. His team got better as the season went on last year. The team has experience, everyone is back and the depth is decent. People in the Capital District are excited about this team and I expect the crowds at the TU Center will be large and loud. With the tourney in Albany I think this team has a built in advantage.

Be nice to head into Albany with an at-large in hand. Probably would take something like 8-3 OOC and 17-3 conf record for that to happen. Definitely improbable, but not impossible. Would give those odds something like 20%.
Siena's got the three C's going for them this year: Continuity, Coaching and Court (for MAAC tourney). Those things mean a lot. Excited for the games to begin.

I think many of the coaches and media that are picking them are doing so because they are picking ncaa rep and believe they will win the tourney based on being home. Sometimes it's not clear, especially with the media, whether they are picking regular season winner or tourney winner

I think to appease the entire league the Maac has begun pushing the at large card, knowing very well there is a great chance the best team in the Maac will have to hope for that. It will take a great season for this to happen again but with the first four it is much more possible than 5-10 years ago, however you need a committee with an open mind like 2012 and not last years committee that clearly did not think much of mid majors.

Agree that there might be slight favoritism toward majors, but not much. With all the data and ratings systems today it's pretty easy to evaluate at-large credentials based on resume and to take the subjectivity out of it. For example, even though the 8-3/17-3 formula above is unlikely, if we had that body of work, would imagine that we'd be close to a shoe-in for at-large, thanks to RPI, quality wins, etc. Like you stated, an at-large today is not as difficult as it once was, and with all the ratings and data available, think it helps mid-majors much more than back in the day.

1. I think Siena is very good 2. Right now, Iona is better than Siena 3. If Iona is better than Siena in March they should beat Siena, home court or not.

I have no problem with Siena being considered the League's second best when talking tournament, my question was for the regular season ranking. AlbanyGael, I think that JP is a good coach, but his one possible weakness is a propensity to constantly pull guys from the game. It causes players to look over their shoulders, and disrupts the flow of the game. At least that is how I see him.
