For the previously 4 years Iona by all stats was the best team in the Metro area...During that time we won almost 100 games, more then any other team, and we have made an effort to meet a strong OOC schedule... Yet...We never placed higher in the final RPI or polls then the mid 40's.....St. John with a weak schedule and a record of 11-2 for a third of a season is already in the top 20 and one city sport writer is touting them as a top 10. They made one short trip to Syracuse, but they have otherwise never left the confines of New York City... The N.Y.City newspapers and its sport writers are desperate for a city team to propel into national prominence and if none is warranted, they will manufacture one......We won if memory serves 29 games one year and trounced the Nations No. 1 team in New York City but still had to wait until a after season poll to finally crack the Top 20 at number 19..............That is the way the cards are stacked. It will never change......... We're playing in a 40 year old high school gym. St. Johns or Seton Hall would win the Maac every year. Come on. Nope. st Johns is good once every 4 years or so. They have no one coming back again next year

Both programs are better than we are this year, imo. There's no shame in that.
We won't break through that next level unless we develop better facilities, imo. Cluess et al can only do so much. If we had a guy like Cady Lalanne to compliment Laury, we'd be very dangerous. And that's no knock on Hines, who I think is great.
OT the RPI is solely a mathematical formula based largely upon the strength of your opponents' schedules. Merely by virtue of playing in the Big East, St. John's has a leg up on us every year in the RPI department. Its not an opinion poll. While St. John's plays Villanova and Butler and Xavier this year, we'll play Fairfield, Canisius, and Rider. Its not even close. Opinion polls, on the other hand are skewed based upon bias.

They have no one coming back again next year SJU is burdened with recruiting to compete at a higher level. If they were in the Maac they would many more recruit options. They wouldn't have to take recruiting risks. How many of our players would turn down playing for SJU?

Both are better than we are. [/quote] Greg......You certainly are entitled to your opinion, but you should preface them with IMO and not state them as a established fact... IMO.......If Iona we were to meet either one of them on a completely neutral such as a Conn. Casino Court the smart betters around the basketball world would not be swayed by N.Y. City press Bull S--- and would establish the game at best a 'Pick Em' or Iona a slight favorite... Granted both St. John and Seton Hall seem to finally got their act together, but both would bow to Iona's on the road experience and scoring power...They would have to score around 80 points or over for a chance of victory, and even that might not be enough...Again of course this is only IMO...... It is a shame such natural rivalries will probably not meet, but the main reason being that N.Y.City power teams coaches see little to gain but much to lose by getting beat by that team from that small school steps outside their sphere of influence...If we were a mediocre team, but a sure win, they would be knocking on our scheduling door... For years such obstacles were overcome for instance in Philly where its cities teams met annually to the profits of fans and school budgets, but not in N.Y. City where in years gone by certain powerful coaches controlled and set the tone instead of basketball controlling them.....

We had our chance to be SJUish. We came up short with Jimmy V but got damn close. We needed that extra year out of Jeff. Didnt happen.
I wish the Johnnies well. I wish Fordham well. Good metro hoops is good for everyone.

St John's is a mess....Steve Lavin does not seem right to me...Since his arrival back to the New York area about 5-6 years ago he does not appear to be himself and seems to be going through the motions...Perhaps he is to involved in recruiting and does not give proper attention to coaching details...Even his interviews are listless and he appears distance and skippering a rudderless ship... I wish him well..... Where is the IMO? ??
