I was watching WLNY's Sunday night Sports show and was impressed by an interview done with Steve Masiello. Twice during a segment about NY basketball he mentioned Iona and specifically the job that Tim Cluess has done. Now, I have to tell you the guy conducting the interview was clueless. While mentioning local teams he included SHU, SJU, Hofstra and even Fordham but not Iona. As I said Masiello jumped right in adding the Gaels into the mix. Like him or hate him Masiello certainly deserves props for that. It was an interesting interview and I hope that since this a CBS affiliate (Long Island) that we can get Tim Cluess on there one of these days.

He's always been very complimentary about Iona and Cluess. Personally the guy doesn't bother me at all. I know some people find him abrasive. I think he definitely knows what he's doing. The degree thing wasn't pretty and Manhattan took a hit in terms of credibility bringing him back. But I think there's plenty of rationalization going on at every local college hoops program.

Coach Massiello is smart in recognizing his league rivals as it benefits his program with recognition of their opponents. He understands that Manhattan vs Iona should be a great rivalry with both programs benefiting. In my opinion the past 3 years the Iona vs Manhattan games have been the games I wanted to watch the most as both teams give their best and the games have been exciting. I bet if we asked the players on both squads who they look forward to playing against in the MAAC they would answer Iona-Manhattan. I'm looking forward to the upcoming games as I expect both teams at the top of the MAAC at that time. Thanks to Coach Massiello for trying to draw attention to Iona.

Was at MC / rider game Sunday. Early in second half angular went to hoop collided with rider player and went to floor in apparent agony. Maasiello started screaming at him unmercifully..."get up emmy get up"he screamed over and over. as there were only 500 people there you could here it loud and clear. He seemed like the biggest jerk as angular was carried off court by two players. 8 minutes later he jogged back onto court and played rest of game. . It proved to me SO has seen this act before. He didn't want emmy to take easy way out for clear no call. He wanted his player to get up and not blame refs or others for missed call. He had clearly seen this action by his player before. I was totally impressed, albeit after fact on how well he knew his player.

He would give us a game. From same school as Cluess on challenging oocs. Sees value in other local teams being good. Not afraid to roll the dice for the sake of a good game.

sigael, not sure it would be SM's call, to give us a game. I was told, and I forget by whom, that Tom Pecora was told that he couldn't schedule Iona.

Saw Carneseca at the Duke - St. John's game . I know that he's considered a local coaching legend, but I can't think of another person who did more to ruin the local college scene. Don't share the spot light with anyone who might be better than you. I know the Big Five went through something similar years ago but managed to work some issues out to preserve at least a part of their tradition. NYC's best local traditional games ended when the ECAC went out the window and Carneseca put the kibosh on playing local teams that could beat his teams. Don't really care for the guy. Find him disenguous and somewhat of a selfish fraud. I know I'm probably in the minority with this.

Legend has it that Iona was to be invited into the original Big East and Louie said that he would not bring in St. John's if Iona and Valvano got the invite. I don't know how true that is but it certainly is believable.

Joebird, how could you say it is believable. It is total nonsense. Louie didn't put the kabash on anything. Gavitt called Kaiser and the other area team was Rutgers. They turned it down so Gavitt took Seton Hall. It was all Gavitt could do to convince louie to join, because Louie did not want to join. But Gavitt had to have SJU, because of their dominant presence in NYC, including their huge alumni base in the area. Kasier and Gavitt finally compelled Louie to agree. His thought process did not include Iona. It is true, though, that the thought of Home and homes with Cuse, GTown, Rutgers (Who at the time was a national powerhouse under Tom Young) etc. Iona did not enter the picture. Why would they want two teams from New York? It just does not make any sense. So, Joebird, don't say that it sounds believable because it sounds absurd. Now why doesn't someone start a jaren Sina thread. Would be an awesome fit at Iona.

Joebird I agree with you again 100%. Louie is not to be admired and St. Chicken has not been a factor in years yet they will not play us. Why? There is only one reason- fear of losing again. You can ask anyone with basketball knowledge reksonn this is a fact. If they knew they could win (see Fordham games) they would play us. But it is fear of losing to a non Big East Team. Last year we had a money game at Georgia and won. This year we had a money game at Wake Forest and won. Soon no one will play us for money and then we will really be in trouble. I stand by my position on Louie's view of Iona. Say what you want but Jimmy V was beating Louie at his own game. Keeping kids home or convincing them to come home to Iona. Louie had used that strategy for years and he hated that Jimmy V had usurped it.
