You have to be blind not to see the ref fall. I tell it like it is and if you told me you have to suspend one player I would say it should be Williams, and he is my favorite player on the team. Not sure how you successfully suspend a hurt player, I guess it would have to be the game after he plays 20+ minutes in a game. Just looked at the video on nycbuckets. Ref definitely fell. AJ didn't push him down however. Ref was holding AJ around the waist when AJ suddenly reversed course and started moving toward the scrum. AJ shrugged the ref off when he started forward again, but clearly didn't shove him. This is a sideshow. The team played like crap most of the game, and we'd better be able to handle full games of teams playing clutch and grab with us without losing our cool or shooting like Fordham.

Agree that the Gaels threw up a stinker tonight. But being able to come through in the clutch as AJ did with his steal and 3 with about 8 seconds left and then the great assist by AJ to KA to force OT is the sign of a team that will not ever give up. We played like shit, but won. I'm damned proud of these guys.
Go Gaels!!!

Eager to watch the replay but a few quick observations from the game.
- Worst referee crew I have ever seen. Period. Totally lost control of the game. A big reason for the brawl was because of built up frustration about the refereeing all game long. If that crew does one more Iona game in my lifetime it would be one too many.
- Haven't heard the ESPN3 broadcast, but did overhear the color guy say the following off the air right after the game ended when a fan asked him what he thought of DL3's technical foul. "Well that's why the kid went to 8 different high schools and colleges. What do you expect?". Just classless and clearly with an anti-Iona agenda for some reason beyond me.
- School and game officials reviewed film of the brawl for almost an hour after the game and didn't see anything egregious. Would be surprised if there are any suspensions.
- AJ money in the clutch once again. Wonder how many times he has to keep doing this before he gets the credit he deserves. And not only was he clutch from behind the arc, he was clutch with his passing, decision making, FT shooting, and even defense, when it mattered the most.
- By far our best defensive effort of the year as far as intensity is concerned.

Java. Desi had a role in this and you have NO idea what their players were saying/doing. Video doesn't tell the whole story. I understand that Guy but a potential 51st pick in the NBA draft next year needs to simply walk away. Good God, let his game speak words. What a fantastic final minute of play and overtime. Yes, I understand he and Desi were trash talking during the game, but to me the ability of a kid to show composure under a tense situation, is what I was looking for.

java, I agree that it would have been better for AJ to walk away. But the way he was repeatedly fouled with no call; the foul that was called on him on a clean block; the frustration of his first half; the great play he had in the final 10 seconds of regulation to get the game to OT; and the win in OT after being chatted up by Washington for most of the game made his conduct understandable to me. He was just letting emotion and exuberance out. Washington was right in his face and, given the blown game at Rider and then blowing the game at Iona makes me believe that Washington was no innocent bystander. If you want to talk trash, St. Pete, back it up with a win.
Go Gaels!!!

Herein, lies your mistake. I have not felt the need to visit that site in years. As I recall it was just a bunch of folks who were jealous of Iona's success. Petty people.
Go Gaels!!!

Dave's technical was a bone headed play, but we overcame it.

Was at the game and I agree with '05. It was the worst refereed Iona game I have seen since I started following the team more than 50 years ago Twice the refs missed walking calls on SPU players who fell after rebounding the ball. Once the player simply got up and began dribbling again. The other time the player pushed the ball forward to a teammate. And #35 Welton did play with five fouls (including his technical) and didn't foul out until his sixth. Don't see how this reffing team can do a D1 game. Just pathetic.

The lack of control was the worst of all. It's bad enough that they screwed up countless calls both ways, but on top of that they were just totally clueless and didn't know how to take control of the game. Also the situations in which they messed calls up were just awful:
1. Questionable foul on Casimir against Washington, giving SPU 3 FTs in a crucial spot in the final minute of game. 2. On the jump ball that preceded AJ's 3 pointer when we were down 4, Washington clearly signals for a timeout when SPU doesn't have any left. Should've been a technical foul, but instead it's a jump ball and possession arrow goes to SPU. 3. Awful goaltending call against SPU in OT when the ball had clearly left cylinder. 4. Numerous missed traveling calls, including two on SPU in final 4 mins of regulation.

I like the fire and intensity. I like that we figured out a way to win. I like that the guys all banded together and had each others' back. I didn't like the poor decision by Dave which resulted in a tech. AJ should've walked away, but hard to fault a guy for not backing down when someone's in his face. This team found a way to win tonight when in the past they probably would've lost the game. Keep doing this and stay out of fights unless we're defending ourselves and we'll be alright.
I don't think Rob Kennedy, who is Pat Kennedy's cousin? Brother? Has anything against Iona. Sounds like he was poking fun at Dave. Dave needs to be smarter and not let his emotions get the better of him. That's how SP's plays. They're not going to beat you with their offensive prowess. They're going to scratch and claw and foul and slow things down and its frustrating but you have to deal with it and keep your head.

I think everyone was annoyed by that call because AJ's arm was hit on the previous possession with no call. Bottom line is refs usually make some bad calls. Its annoying, frustrating, makes you angry, makes you wonder if they are biased, but we still have a game to win. Cluess/players have to forget about bad calls, unless Cluess is intentionally working the refs. No one is out to get us.

Good post. Agree on all points. Just saw video and still don't see anything that AJ did wrong. Could he have walked away? Sure. But the other kid was in his face first and in the heat of the moment can you blame AJ for not backing down? It's a man's sport. This isn't tiddlywinks.

Seemed to me like there was a lot of frustration to go around. Them for blowing the lead, and us for having to deal with their tempo and style of play and almost losing at home. Two competitive teams going down to the wire, frustrated. Maybe the refs will have a tighter whistle in the rematch in Jersey City, which should help us I think.

When I checked the box score for the game, I discovered some interesting stats. St. Peter's bench players scored zero points on 0-7 shooting. Iona's bench (Dublin, Hines and Muhammad) tallied 16 points on 6-8 shooting. So our bench shot 75% and our starters were 15-53, which equates to 28%. If anyone needs a definition of "winning ugly" this game exemplified it.
