Hines is slowly becoming the role player that fits Iona needs... There are many that expect and have high hopes that he will be another scoring weapon added to our already strong offense...His recent play of grabbing 8 or 9 rebounds, keeping the ball alive, and increased inside under the basket presence is where he fills a most valuable need... He obviously as been instructed that this is his role and that offense is secondary and to be utilized only when highly in his advantage or shot clock necessary....He has accepted this role and with it we have become better as recent defensive ability has shown.... Cluess system is designed primarily towards team play and needs as opposed to the individual play that has led to the ruin of many teams whose coaches allow or are to weak to control its destructive nature... Hines appears to have found the right path and will only improve in time...Lets sit back and enjoy his team value.......

I think OT's is an accurate of Ryden's contribution to this team. I also think that Ryden is still adjusting to the speed of the D1 game, and that adjustment is made more difficult by the team he happens to play for - one of the fastest teams in D1. He seems to be still thinking out there, and not yet reacting. Part of that could be because of, as OT points out, the role he needs to play. I'm glad we have him; and he is working well with DL.

Agreed. While he still may have some up and down games, I am a fan of his game, and what he contributes. He spends lots of time diving for balls on the court. For what ever reason he looks tentative on some open 3 point shots, which he clearly has shown he can make. I look forward to watching him develop the next couple years.

Hines absolutely needs to improve his catch and finish down low. Major gap in his game.

Has anyone noticed how slow and plodding Hines has gotten of late in getting his shot off? Reminds me of that Penn State bigman transfer Iona had about 5 -7 years ago.

If there was a stat for tap backs he would be leading the Maac. He has done a great job of keeping balls alive. He simply isn't an inside scorer and he knows it. He is a contributer.

without hines we would be in trouble, he does the dirty work that helps the team win especiallythe boxouts he provides on bigger players so others can get rebounds is very unrecognized

John Kelly Yes Kelly went to Penn State before Iona, but I don't believe he ever attempted a three pointer for Iona, so I'm not getting the slow release comparison!

Kelly: Slow plodder, 7 footer that played sparingly for 3 years. A back-up center that was an experiment for Penn State for a year. Hines is a small forward trying to play the low post at times because we need him there. He has a good outside shot and gives 110 percent. I don't know if he can be made into an effective inside player because that isn't his skill set.

Hines is solid, and his role may become more significant in years to come!

But he can help even more if he can catch the passes Amayo and Laury give him down low and get a shot up.
