Building up to the Iona-Vermont game, December 22nd, Brian Voelkel was the local standout in last night's Frankie Williams' benefit game in Greenburgh. He finished with a double-double (points and rebounds), and that should give the OT some early ammo in the ongoing battle with ICH.

It is water under the bridge, but Voelkel can rebound, drive, pass, handle and shoot the three...Oh how he would have thrived under under the new system coach will teach....I find it strange that IChoops now thinks our front court will be OK when he thought Voelkel was to small and that we needed to get bigger.....I think he was playing the Devils advocate as he usually does and really knows Voelkel is a good one......
IC.....How soon if not already do they gather at Hynes for free lance scrimmages?.....Back in pretty good shape and would like to walk down.....Also been told that official practices will be open and welcome for the most part.......
Go Gaels!!!!!

Summer School, June session, is on, so I would think that if the players are there, they would be playing today. I'm guessing about 3-5, Monday through Thursday. Once the Summer Camp for Kids starts, probably the last week of June, the players couldn't start until 5PM or thereabouts. Let me know if you make it over. I believe the second summer school session ends about August 6th.

Boys boys boys. I stand by my earlier statements he's not a 4. If he ends up at the 4 and beats up on our front court I'll buy you both dinner. If he's a 3 I'd certainly rather have Armand/Smyth on the court. I'm happy with McFadden. He'll be better this year.

IC59....Took your advice and walked down to Hynes...Thought fpr a moment I had gone back a year, as all the doors were taped and a each had a "Absoilutely no admittance" sign on them. Spoke to a worker outside who explained that they were putting in a new floor and gym would be out use until late July..
On the way out met Kyle Smyth who was just finishing a work out run....Had a nice 15 minute conversation with him....He is a terrific kid, and showed me down to the lower gym where they would be scrimmaging....They were not scrimmaging today, but he told me they would be there as you say Mon-Thurs. at about 3PM...
Tried to be diplomatic in my talk, but he did mention a few things that I thought interesting.....Williams is his best buddy, and was sorry to see him leave......Kesic is not in school yet....He raved about Armand.............His main ambition is to play in the NCAA's...Is pretty sure no else is leaving....He agreed with me about his hesitancy to shoot at times..He explained that he in his first year was trying to play team concept, but we will see more offense with particularaly the drive and short jump shot...I jokingly asked him if he could guess what I thought was his best game last year, and to my surprise he answered with my thought also--the away game at Manhattan where he grabbed every rebound in the last 10 minutes.
IMO we will see the best of Kyle starting this year.
Go Gaels!!!!!

I agree oldtimer, could be a big year for Smyth. He should get a ton of 3 point attempts with Machado driving the ball and kicking it out when the defenders collapse on him. Hopefully these kids are taking a thousand jumpers a day.

oldtimer, did you notice from the MAAC board that David Samuels failed to qualify? Evidently, preping a year to get his academics in order. Preping will probably also create higher offers for him next year.

OT, thanks. I'm hoping that the College is puting down a second wood floor, and not just refurbishing the center court. KW had been pushing for it. A second wooden court would allow the team to expand their practice sessions, because, presently, the other two courts are only used to practice FT shooting. And, possibly, at times, the Men's and Women's teams could practice at the same time. B/t/w, did Kyle mention where Keon was transferring to?

While they're working on that floor, maybe they can fix the artwork that was done a few years back... it needs brighter crisper coloring... not the dull brownish maroon and muted gold that's there now... looks like crap and they really aren't Iona's colors.

CJB..No I did not know of the Samuel situation...... Since he committed to Loyola .... did not qualify, and is now going to a prep school, does this allow his freedom to sign up elsewhere next year? I expect it does, but you never know all the interpertations of NCAA rules...... He is big, and growing...He has speed....He can shoot the foul line jumper...He is a great team man...He can fill in at the 5 position....and he would help fill up Hynes.....Can we hope..... IC59....Kyle did not mention where Williams is going...I suspect however if he knew he would have said so.....Got a kick out of this. He mentioned that while scrimmaging at the auxiliary gym, everybody was dunking at the north basket..After a few days they decided to messure it, and found it was several inches lower...Back to earth for some of the smaller guards.... Go Gaels!!!!!!
