Saw a post on the MAAC off topic board about the death of Carroll Shelby (auto designer/racer) and thought this might make for an interesting off topic thread. It also provides some insight as to the demographic of fellow board posters. Post a picture of the first car you drove and another of the first car you actually owned. First drove: the family car - a 1967 Chevy Impala 4 door in white much like this one. I can't believe I was able to pass my drivers test by parallel parking this boat. Blue vinyl interior, ash trays like todays cupholders, no headrests and lap belts that nobody ever used. First owned: 1969 Pontiac Firebird 350 Red with a black converible top, black vinyl interior, raised white letter tires. Bought it while I was at Iona in 1974 from a classmates brother. What a car, but a thirsty 350 engine that you could see the gas guage needle move down as you drove! Gas was had shot up to about .65 cents that year! How about you guys?

Don't remember the first car I drove, probably the family car, also a Chevy Impala. The first car I owned was a Fiat 850, bought used for $500. If I remember correctly the engine was in the rear and the wheels only sporadically complied with the steering. There was a rust hole in the floor on the driver's side so if I looked down while driving I could see a patch of the pavement. I don't remember if it had heat. It had a radio. The body was constructed of some sort of glorified cardboard, which made it a complete death trap. It got great gas mileage though. It looked kind of like this one.

Beat this for age. Leaving the service 1945-46 I purchased my first car. It was a 1931 Ford Model T for 175 dollars..One of the better vehicles I have ever owned. Owned it for over 3 1/2 years. The only problem once had a broken front spring..Fixed that by inserting a sawed off 2 by 4 which solved the problem..If they made a modern body with radio and air but keeping the simplicity, I would be interested. Made few trips to Siena with it. Once took us 6 hours to get home in a raging blizzard. Oh to be young again........I decided to buy a brand new vehicle in 1950...Big mistake..It was 1950 Nash for about 2,000 dollars. The only redeeming feature was the two front seats folded to make a bed, but even that was a problem as it led to consant borrowing....Owned several new cars since then best being a 2006 Honda accord.

First car I drove was a 1973 Chevy Impala that was Green with a white painted roof (not vinyl). The car was a tank and I am pretty sure that for Irish families owning an impala was as much a requirement as the picture of JFK hanging in the house. First car I owned was a mint 1977 Chevy Camaro LT I bought off my brother in 1982. I have owned Vettes, Lincolns, Mercedes, Land Rovers etc... The Camaro was my all time favorite. It looked exactly like this example... Firethorne red and white interior:

Perhaps the reason the seat/bed concept didn't save Nash was this ad not properly capturing its intended use!
Aw well, it was the 50"s... Ozzie and Harriet slept in seperate twin beds.
