Nyre doing a great job repairing Iona image in NR and also in the academic community with his "Integrity" initiatives. Some interesting info on school's website. As for a renovated Hynes--looks like don't hold your breath. Got a mailing from Development staff, outlining Iona's Strategic Plan. "...to this end, Iona is developing a facility master plan that will establish future capital priorities and space utilization needs. New classrooms, studios, and computer lab spaces...Innovative design of residences and academic spaces will be particularly important..."No direct mention of athletics or athletic facilities in the summary document.

[/quote] Iona held the first in series of Campus Master Plan meetings in terms of facilities. On more than one occasion the need for a new/renovated gym/arena was brought up by students and staff - especially in terms of getting the Iona name out there and as an opportunity to draw events to a new/renovated Iona building as a means of bringing in new revenue. Here is the company that was hired to work on the new Campus Master Plan: www.thecollaborativeinc.com/homepage.html

More news on Iona acquiring property www.iona.edu/news/releases/release.cfm?ID=181&test=1" Iona will host a public meeting in early October to share updates on its master planning process and discuss other development interests on North Avenue. That event will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 7, in Romita Auditorium of Ryan Library."

Tony Cannone is likely turning over in his grave giving up that prime North and Mayflower northwest corner. Prior to Cannone's Pizza, I remember a White Tower hamburger joint similar to the one below followed by another fast food hamburger (McDonald's knockoff) called The Wigwam. oldtimer, how's your memory of that location?

CJB....The White Castle was a hot spot back in those days...There was only one High School in New Rochelle...Their team was always one of nations best...The crowds always ran about 10,000 and they flocked to after games hamburgers which price ran to about 25 cents for 3 burgers and a coffee...I looked forward to my coming high school days and White Castle, but unfortunately they decided New Rochelle needed 3 High schools, one vocational,(Albert Leonard),another academic Isaac E. Young, and New Rochelle High...I went to I.E.Young and was in their first graduation class 1942...The Twin Lakes in front of New Rochelle H S. always were crowded for ice skating and the W. Castle did a big hot coffee business...As a Detective one of my first cases was the investigation of the frozen body of a female we had to chop out of the lake ice...It sure was a memory filled area of the city.....
