Heard sad news from Brian Beyrer that Tony Cannone passed away. I have known Tony since I was 14 or 15 years old, living in Orange County, NY. He used to own a pizza restaurant in Florida, NY (near Goshen where I went to High School). Low and behold, Tony opens a pizzeria (actually 2 at one time) in New Rochelle across from Iona College and he has fed 2 generations of Iona students (and alumni) for 30 years. I used to leave him tickets for Iona basketball games all the time. If it wasn't for Tony, I would probably be 6'5" and 210 lbs. Rest in peace Tony. Pizza and calzones on North Avenue will never be the same (especially at 3 in the morning). Attachments:

CANNONE, GAETANO "TONY" (1933 - 2010) Gaetano "Tony" Cannone, of New Rochelle, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on August 1, 2010. Tony was born in Vallata, Italy on April 7, 1933 to Nicola and Assunta Cannone. He lived in Italy until 1973 at which time he, his wife and small children immigrated to the United States. In 1977 he first opened the doors to Cannone's Pizza, which he owned and operated, on North Avenue in New Rochelle. Affectionately known to all as Mr. Cannone, it was his generosity, love for life and constant smile that made everyone want to be near him. His establishment became both a part of the Iona College experience as well as a mainstay in the New Rochelle community. He will be missed and remembered by all who knew him. Tony will forever be in the hearts of those he leaves behind; his devoted wife Angelina, a son Nicholas and his wife Stacey, a daughter Susie and her husband Steven; and his cherished granddaughters, Madeleine and Charlotte. Also survived by his brothers Michele, Mario, Amedeo, and Guido and his sisters Giovanna, Raffaela and Susie. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4-9 PM at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday at Holy Family Church, New Rochelle. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. This man's $2 bologna and american cheese hero special was my meal plan when funds ran low back in '85.
Of course I could have done without the day they varnished the wood panel walls on the first warm day in spring. They left the doors open and hundreds of flys got stuck to the wall. ;D
Sorry to hear of his passing.

I remember when he first opened. His pizza was delicious and being the smart marketer that he was, he gave you an enormous slice. Perfect for late night munchies. Before, Cannones all there was was G&G Pizza a few doors down from the Church Key (which btw was originally a pizza restaurant called Antonios)... G&G had pan pizza, we all called it "Greek pizza" because the guy who owned it was a Greek named George. G&G was another institution, it opened in the late 60's (?) oldtimer? George and Tony were both two extremely hard working immigrants, I give them both a ton of credit for accomplishing their American dream.
