The NCAA Division 1 Team Statistics through January 10, 2014 show the following: Stat- Ranking 17.8 Assists per game- #6 82.4 points per game- #20 10.3 3 Pointers made per game- #4 40.7% 3 pt%- #17 329 3 pts Attempted- #61 145 Turnovers- #22 48.4% FG%- #32 36.5% 3 pt% Defense- #273 80.8 pts/game Scoring Defense- #333 1.5 pts/game Scoring Margin- #188 1.59 Assist/Turnover Ratio- #9 -6.2/game Rebound Margin- #327
Interesting numbers at this point. They do not include the Fairfield and Siena games. The Good: assists, turnovers and 3 pt%. The Bad: rebounding and overall defense. We are like the nursery rhyme "There Was a Little Girl"- When she was good She was very good indeed, And when she was bad she was horrid. Hopefully we can keep our intensity levels up and improve the team defense moving forward. I understand we will never be a leader in most defense stats as we generate a high number of possessions for us and our opponents, but I would like to see the defense fg% and scoring margin improve. We need to be healthy down the stretch.

Husker, one week ago (Jan. 6th) I posted this in the Quinnipiac thread: This Gaels team reminds me of the little girl in the poem by Longfellow: THERE was a little girl, And she had a little curl Right in the middle of her forehead. When she was good She was very, very good, And when she was bad she was horrid. I wonder if you read that and subliminally it stayed with you. Your observations are generally spot-on and obviously we agree that this year's team (as is the case with the past several years) can be awe inspiring one game when they play to their full potential and downright frustrating the next. Let's hope they learn from their mistakes, tighten up their game and keep the "horrids" to a minimum.

Resumeman, your post must have remained in my subconscious. I apologize for referencing without crediting you. I can take short periods of horrid play, but not whole games. Let's finish as we did last year. Feeling good about the fact that we have 3 players who can step it up when needed. Health will be key.

No need to apologize Husker - great minds think alike. I am encouraged that in the last two games, the team was able to win despite a major off-night for Sean Armand (against Fairfield) and a sub-par outing by Laury (against Siena). It is encouraging that even when our preseason MAAC First Team players are rendered ineffective, other teammates are stepping up and getting the job done. I believe that English by season's end may even turn out to be the team's leading scorer rather than Armand. There will probably be some additional stumbles in the road ahead, but I agree with you that barring injury, this team can still achieve positive results come tournament time.

The NCAA Division 1 Individual Statistics through January 12, 2014 show the following: Stat- Ranking 3 pt FG%: 43.9%- #30 Sean Armand 43.7%- #31 AJ English 3 pt/game: 3.13- #20 Sean Armand 3.00- #26 AJ English Scoring/game: 19.1- #51 Sean Armand 18.2- #83 AJ English Minutes/game: 37.0- #11 Sean Armand 35.4- #55 AJ English Assists/game: 4.1- #139 AJ English
This dynamic duo will clearly draw the attention of opposing coaches/players with the numbers to date. It will be interesting to see how each team chooses to defend these two. Waiting for the big game from Sean as AJ will clearly get more attention with his recent performances. Expecting Masiello to have Manhattan play very physical with hard fouls and cheap shit like drifting under jump shooters causing awkward landings. All designed to get in our player's heads and off their shooting rhythm. Praying the refs call the game tight early. Time to crank-it up and overwhelm teams early.

The NCAA Division 1 Team Statistics through April 1, 2014 show the following: Stat- Ranking 17.5 Assists per game- #3 83.6 points per game- #4 10.2 3 Pointers made per game- #1 39.6% 3 pt%- #12 338 Total 3 pts Made- #2 10.6/game Turnovers- #40 1.65 Assist/Turnover Ratio- #4 -5.1/game Rebound Margin- #326
The NCAA Division 1 Individual Statistics through April 1, 2014 show the following: Stat- Ranking 3 pt FG%: 44.2%- #12 Sean Armand 3 pt/game: 2.91- #26 Sean Armand 2.55- #58 AJ English Total 3 pt Made: 96- #20 Sean Armand
Once again Iona is well represented in a number of offensive categories. The scoring/game, assist-turnover ratio, assists/game, 3 pt FG%, 3 pt FG/game and Total 3 pt Made are all impressive. Amazing that Coach Cluess' system continues to put up impressive numbers even with the loss of talented players such as Mike Glover, Scott Machado and Momo Jones. The loss of Sean Armand will be missed, but I do not expect a drop-off in team stats with the return of AJ English, David Laury and Isaiah Williams and the arrival of Kelvin Amayo. With the continued development of more consistent team defense I feel we will win a game next year that we would have lost in the past. Next season it will be interesting to see who out the remaining returnees evolves into the next up and coming star. Can not wait to see who lands on campus and on next year's team. It will not be long before we know what surprises the staff has for us in new talent.

I want to know where we rank in defensive efficiency and defensive FG%. Points allowed is not a concern because of the tempo we play.
The rebounding margin is why our defense was so horrific.

GuyF, a good reference is the Basketball State website refer to the following link www.bbstate.com/stats/teamP . It shows our offensive and defensive efficiency per possession. Iona ranked #4 in offensive efficiency behind Creighton, Duke and Louisville. Pretty good company. Offensive efficiency: 1.16 Defensive efficiency: 1.06. Iona ranks #331 in Points against at 77.6 with FG% of 45.4%.

That defensive FG% is good enough. Defensive rebounding was the problem. This also means that if you assume a lot of those O rebounds resulted in easy putbacks, our defense on the opponent's first shot is pretty darn good.

GuyF, there is hope we make improvements next year with the improvements this year. Coach Cluess has the program pointed in the right direction. Just curious who is our incoming talent and who makes the big step/improvement next year. All good stuff.

you really thought our defense was better, are there any stats to prove that?
