Play the best teams possible every season...quote. We have a gym of a home court that seats 2,500 that are more often then not filled and where return games are hard if not impossible to schedule...We have a budget that is dwarfed by the biggies...We have a stymied fan base that has not really increased in over 50 years...We have a enrollment at best of aprox. 4,000...We are based a stones throw from one of the world's biggest cities and its captured audience and press..... IMO we are already making a concerted effort to schedule the ''Best teams possible'', but we may have reached the pinnacle of that endeavor...... ''The young dream.......The old live with reality''

I was at Iona for two meetings today. I was told that Dr. Nyre gives a "State of Iona" speech tomorrow, and for what it's worth (and don't know if it will be included in the speech) but one of the goals is to change the gym into an arena. And naturally I told them (Advancement team) that I've been hearing that since Pat Kennedy was coach. So let's keep an open mind.
P.S. Wonder if Jim Calhoun thinks that Gene Marshall is still our AD?

I wish there were a way to toughen the MAAC schedule a bit, since the 'bigs' seem hard to schedule. At a late stage of the regular season wouldn't it be a good idea for two other Mid Major Conferences to enter into an agreement with the MAAC. #1's would play each other and so on down the line. Each team would get a home and an away game. So you wouldn't be getting a big, but you would be getting a team that is having a big year. I for one, could get excited about Iona playing at Stony Brook and home against Delaware.......for example. If Iona earned the right in a strong campaign, it would give them a chance to prove themselves against teams that had won perhaps 70 % of their games that year. It would be kind of a modified Bracketbuster. The following year, you could return the favor and switch courts for the follow up game. I like the idea of Mid Majors with higher RPI's playing each other late in the season.

Dansimms, in looking at the conference rpi's the MAAC is #17 and America East (Stony Brook) is #27. Our OOC games against other mid majors I feel we're good opponents the past several years. I think we are better finding our own games versus the MAAC scheduling games. We keep playing exciting basketball we will get some opportunities.

I still like my idea. The number 1 school at MAAC, Colonial and America East will generally have an RPI in the range of 85 to 95....sometimes even a bit better. So two more games like that for a conference leader having a strong season would be guaranteed. If a team swept both of those games it would help their resume for getting an at large bid in certain seasons. The travel wouldn't be too extensive either, since limited to the east. In a typical MAAC season how many league games are against teams with an RPI better than 100 if you are the number one team that year......2 to 4 in a good year? This would bring that number up every year by 2. Getting 3 leagues to agree to this would be the hard part.

Hopefully we'll get a big at MSG or the Barc next year. Doubleheader with Manhattan playing a big in the other game. Also would love to play Stony Brook which I think is the most overrated team in the metro area. Their Sagarin SOS is over 300. They get more ink and exposure than we do. Would love to kick their butts .

It's tough to get the BCS schools to schedule the Gaels in anything but a buy game, so it's smart to load up on attainable home-and-home opponents from solid non-BCS leagues. The series with St. Bona and George Mason are perfect. It'd be great to land another A10 opponent like George Washington or La Salle, too. Target top CAA teams, too. Towson, Delaware, Drexel, and Charleston come to mind. By doing this, Iona can play the RPI game a bit.
