OUCH! It appears this maybe much bigger than first thought and may have criminal charges brought against the fired assistant coach. St. John's relied on a supposedly official transcript provided by Westchester Community College. How are these schools supposed to know if the official transcripts provided by the issuing school are bogus? Contact each instructor and ask for an affadavit that the named student was physically in their classroom and received a grade? I feel St. John's got burned and is not directly at fault. Still it hits their reputation and hurts the basketball program. Thank goodness this did not involve Iona. Hopefully Quinnipiac dodges a bullet with McLean.

It seems simple enough to me...Do you honestly believe it was not widely known that they were not attending classes...Chances are that this was being done with a 'Blink of the eye' mentality...I'll also wager that not even a simple phone call of inquiry was made...A trained and determined investigator would have uncovered the pertinent facts within a few hours.....I have little doubt that a student or instructor leaked the story to a local reporter...

A question for SID. Does he know, or could he ask the coaching staff, how do they know if a transcript has been altered? And how much Due Dilligence is considered normal?

I guess when a name on a transcript is in print vs. signature, a redlight goes off for during the review process.

Cjb, before a transcript gets to Admissions, I would think that the coaching staff would have to see it, in order to know if the kid is scholarship material. If Guy sets up a Q & A with Rick Cole, this process would be a good question for Rick. And while you have to feel for the kids, I must admit, when I saw ALL the people investigating what went on, it made me chuckle. It's just a matter of time before the MAAC Board launches their own investigation, and I hope that 86 and Guy are part of the Committee. Hopefully, a Siena Fan will head up the team. (Smiley Face)

]A question for SID. Does he know, or could he ask the coaching staff, how do they know if a transcript has been altered? And how much Due Dilligence is considered normal?
Most coaching staffs do little if any investigation as to the possible altering of transcript... IMO coaches should coach and should be secondary to School officials in monitoring of student academics...The policy of ''What you don't know won't hurt you'' prevails...The most they could be admonished for would be ''Poor transcript investigations'', which a simple ''We are reviewing and tightening our policies reference transfers'' would suffice... As to how much Due diligence is considered normal?...To answer you would have to have knowledge of how much todays society would tolerate.....

I have no idea regarding the coaching staff's invovement with checking transcripts, but I would think it would be in their own interest to be involved on some level. If something goes wrong, it's the coach who will pay the price. Whether it's his fault or not.

SLG and Greg, both opinions make sense to me. And reading the Fordham and Seton Hall boards, reference Keith Thomas, I couldn't find anything on the Fordham (but that doesn't mean I didn't miss it) board about him. Even though they were a finalist when recruiting him. And SH fans feel that his loss will really hurt SJU's front court.
Super.....That is either a sarcastic oriented question or from one that does not realize that a 70 year period of time does not fall into ''Todays Society'' realm.... I have it pretty well set up so as I can attend first game...Aide loves basketball...Tells me it is very popular in Ghana where it is called ''Net Ball''. Be sure to say hello.....
