That was painful, since I have attended all of those games. It's really amazing that we were so close in all but Maryland, which was over in the first 10 minutes. (I guess a case could be made that we were out of LSU, but we actually had our way with them in the 1st half.)

It was great to see that. While our record seems horrible our actual performance has been pretty good - Several close games that could have (should have?) gone our way and no real blow-outs. When you compare that with some other mid-majors who have had 30 or 40 point blow-outs the Gaels have actually performed very well in the NCAA tournament.

Of course, that does indicate we may be two of the older people on this site.

Real revisionist history, but I actually thought we had a shot at 2 games in 84, 85, 98, 01, & 06 (although I hated the LSU matchup like I hated the Maryland game.)
In 1980, we had a legitimate shot as a Final 4 Team. (Bucky Waters actually agreed on an NBC game--although Marv Albert thought Bucky was nuts.) Had we moved ahead, we would have had an announcer's and newspaper reporter's nightmare game : Iona vs. Iowa.

Surprised this wasn't a "poll" - which team do you think gave the best performance in the Tournament, save the 1980 which won a game so it wins hands down.

Guy, is their any way you can add that espn link I posted to the "Links of Interest"? Just so we can access them at a later date if needed, I know Im always looking for old Iona boxscore and roster stuff. Thanks

Done. I also moved that 09-10 stat page that was in with the "other" links up to the Iona section.

The 1979 loss to Penn still hurts. Three factors killed us in that game: 1) Dave Brown, our 2nd leading rebounder and scorer, goes down with a knee injury after 4 minutes 2) Kevin Hamilton has an off night shooting against the zone (5 for 16) and 3) Jeff Ruland only gets 10 FG attempts going 6 for 10. Without Dave, Tony Price, Penn's 6'5" forward killed us.

How about the Mike Palma "travel" with 46 seconds left? ? I don't think we would have beaten UNC on Sunday like Penn did.

Mike never traveled! But even with that call, a healthy Dave Brown would have been a 10 point difference, first by taking 6 to 8 points away from Price and then adding 6 to 8 points to our total with a healthy Dave. As for the next game, I think we would have beat them with a healthy Brown.

Oy, the luck we've had in the tourney. Sometimes I think we're like the old Red Sox. On the flip side we're overdue for some "breaks" and I don't mean bones.
