I was a Mets fan during my New York years. In fact, I arrived in NY the same year as the Mets, and I learned the game from listening to Bob Murphy, Lindsey Nelson, and Ralph Kiner. They spent so much of the broadcast with "this is what he should have done" that I considered the broadcasts as a personal tutorial. My Cards have had an incredible year, but I am afraid that their season may "die from a thousand cuts". If that should happen, the Mets are back on my scope.

Met fan since Day 1. First ballgame was Mets/Reds at the Polo Grounds.
Through thick or thin attend on average 6-8 games a year and will get to some of the playoff games.
Dislike the ownership and front office intensely, but have to say they pushed the right buttons at the trade deadline.
Finally, it's a great time to be a Met fan. LGM!!!

I was about 5-6 years old when I went with my dad and the corner news stand gang to the Polo Grounds to see my first Giant baseball game...Never forget it...As we crossed the Harlem river walkway and train bridge, my dad picked me up and hand held me 100 feet over the river below...You would get locked for child abuse for doing things like that now, but that was my Dad's way of toughening you up...Fell in love that day with Carl Hubbell, Mel Ott and Freddie Fitzimmons...
My heart was broken when they left...I even made a special trip to Sedgewick Ave and parked across the river, and shed a tear as they tore down the place where I had spent watching hundreds of games...
It took a while, but I eventually rooted for the Mets...This season with its ups and down was one of the most enjoyable of all...Watching the celebration that followed confirmed my view that this was one of the most diverse but close knit teams I had seen in quite a few years....
Looking forward to playoffs and World Series......EXPECT Victory, but have long ago learned to EXCEPT loss..

Mets fan my whole life. When I was very young I lived in an apartment in my grandparents house. My grandmother first lived in Brooklyn when she came to America and loved the Dodgers. She used to always whisper in my ear to root for the Mets, and never the Yankees. I remember in 1986 how my friends, who were Mets fans, were hanging out together watching the playoffs, and having a few cold ones, I always passed in favor of watching the games with my ailing grandmother and having a great time. Just one the reasons I've been loyal to this franchise forever, even though I dislike the current owners.Life is funny though, even though I always took my kids to about 6 games a year, my son is a Yankee fan thanks to my father in law.

...my son is a Yankee fan... I have that scenario too, only because growing up all they saw was the Yanks winning every year and the Mets struggling.
When inter-league play began in the late 90's, I took them to a Met/Yankee game at Shea stadium. They in Yankee gear and me in Met gear. Around the fifth inning some guy behind me taps me on my shoulder and questions if they were my kids. After saying they were he asks how they were Yankee fans, I told him I loved the Beatles, but my father thought they were communists - the apple may not fall far from the tree, but sometimes it rolls.

OT-- another thing we have in common: I attended my first baseball game at the Polo Grounds with my dad on 8/17/54, a gift for my 5th birthday. Johnny Antonelli beat the Phillies 8-3; Willie Mays went 4-4 with 2 stolen bases. (Dad died 5 years later at age 30, leaving behind 5 kids. That's how I got toughened up.) I have continued to be a Giants fan and have thoroughly enjoyed their 3 World Series victories in 5 years.
Glad you appreciate the "diversity" of the Mets.
As I usually do, I like to focus on commonality rather than highlight differences.

[OT........Glad you appreciate the "diversity" of the Mets. As I usually do, I like to focus on commonality rather than highlight differences.[/p][/quote] SUPER SUPER....A little story that might help mutual understanding.....About 1934-35 was taught lessons in both ''Diversity and Commonality'' which have served me well for many years...You being a true believer in there is ''Goodness'' in all will appreciate... My Grandfather a Italian immigrant about 1897 came to America, worked hard built his own home, married raised a family and managed to provide a decent living during the great depression.... As a child of 7-8 years of age, each night I crawled under the kitchen table and took his laced high top work shoes off his tired feet...One night as his oldest daughter was working on salary checks I overheard a lifetime lesson... My grandfather and a fine black family's back yard was separated only by a wire fence which they talked back and forth while working in their yards...Noticing that Mr. Waters (a uniformed private chauffer) had not gone to work in a while asked if he was ill... Waters answered that he had lost his longtime job due to the depression and was in danger of losing his home... After thinking of it overnight my grandfather knew it would bring much animosity among the Italian neighborhood as much resentment would rise about giving a black man work when there were none to be had simply said to Mr. Waters ''You come to work for me tomorrow'' When his daughter asked my Grandfather ''What do we pay MR.Water's''...He answered in his broken English ''He do the same work, he gets the same pay'' A simple answer from a uneducated Italian immigrant given about 80 years ago that is in some ways unsolved today....I was taught well by a fine man who was ahead of his time...

Total pitching domination + timely hitting + starstruck Murphy. Now they can set their rotation any way they want.
