I've run out of things to try in specifying an avatar. For Modify Profile, I enter the avatar URL then, whether I put 100, 100 for the height and width or not, after I hit the Modify Profile button to make it take (as per the site's Help tutor) the URL disappears.
A few of you have succeeded, so if you've run into the same behavior I'd be grateful to learn the way around it.

May have to do with the size of the image--file size, I mean.

When you enter modify profile, do you enter your password? think this is necessary in order to execute desired modification.
