OT Bernie Sanders is not going to be the Democratic nominee. So you'll have to scare people with some other tact, while offering no solutions and insulting everyone born after 1946. And maybe, just maybe, you'll take off the blinders long enough to acknowledge that Conservative pundits and candidates have played their part stirring the pot by employing extreme rhetoric instead of engaging in honest debate. And the Republican party nominee has done this country a great disservice by lowering the level of discourse to that of a middle-schooler running for President. Even if he is simply pandering and doesn't believe half the nonsense he's spouted, which completely lacks substance, he has still done this country a great disservice by campaigning from the gutter. As a proud American, I find his campaign insulting to my intelligence, incoherent, and at times utterly offensive in its undermining of important principles deeply woven into the fabric of this country. Instead of calling Mexican Immigrants "illegals" since they haven't violated any criminal laws, he should call them WOPs, people in the country "without papers." How would you feel about that? Bill: Even when it is obvious that the candidate needs to demonstrate some grasp of issues (Brexit being the most recent example), TRUMP has shown himself to be completely unprepared to engage in even a rudimentary discussion - not even something as basic as "that is an issue for the Brits". The guy was a deer in the running lights when asked about Brexit. At some point, conservatism in US politics morphed from "let's debate this further before we make a change" to "you are an idiot, an unpatriotic one at that; and you don't belong on this earth". They are obstructionists with no ability to articulate a vision for this country and its place in the world. "Let's bomb the bastards (shock and awe), and show them who is the boss." The have learned nothing from WW II - a war that almost went the other way on Omaha Beach. They have learned even less from Vietnam and its 55,000 victims. Did we win that war? Did we affect positive change in SE Asia? Did we affect positive change in the Middle East as a result of BUSH II? War has consequences, some unintended! Sec. of Commerce Henry Wallace recorded in his diary. "Truman said he had given orders to stop atomic bombing. He said the thought of wiping out another 100,000 people was too horrible." I am referring to TRUMP and his horde of angry disaffected followers. People such as our beloved OT, can not see that TRUMP will kick him to the curb as soon as OT no longer benefits TRUMP. The irony to me is that most of those same people enjoy benefits (pensions, SS and/or medicare)funded by us "idiots". To me, OT, at the age nearing 92, and others have earned their benefits.

Irish playwright and Nobel Laureate George Bernard Shaw once said: "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
Super.... Super......George Bernard Shaw was a avowed SOCIALIST...An in depth readings of his writings will reveal a mindset that is the apathy of democracy... Did they teach the history of any true American's during your school years or is it just a coincidence that they are all of the revolutionary group that think and preach they have found the way to equalize life....The closest so far is democracy...That is why we are the greatest Nation on earth... Socialism at one time was the darling of this ilk...That did not turn out so well...It morphed into Communism...That was a disaster, and now they will try Socialism again on this new and easily led generation..... I may have a few years left...Life to me has been tough but fair...I will now make a strong effort to disengage from this 'No Win' discussion and enjoy remaining life...and pray for those that must face the futures fortunes...
You should be as concerned about the extreme right wing positions being championed these days as you are the extreme left wing positions. Simply because someone is a socialist, doesn't preclude that person from having wisdom. I personally don't champion socialism or think that it will work in this country. The Democratic nominee will not be a socialist. No one knows what the Republican nominee will stand for, however. BTW Hillary Clinton condemned any form of violence at any political rally, Trump's or otherwise recently.

St. Louie
Omaha Beach was a hard fought battle, but the outcome was never in doubt....Once we gained a beachhead and controlled the air it was for all over except for desperate German defense.....With our control of the air German troops could not move a foot without being destroyed from the air...They had some success when weather prevented most flight at the battle of the bulge, but once the skies cleared the end of the war became just a matter of time.....
''The only thing new, is the history you don't know''...or in your case make up.!!!!

''The only thing new, is the history you don't know''...or in your case make up.!!!! The air support to soften the defenses of Omaha Beach did not show. That is one of the reasons for the carnage at that site. The Naval bombardment missed the beach and the German batteries at Omaha. They were all in place when we landed. Because the Navy missed the beach, there were no bomb craters for the troops to use as instant fox holes. It took one of the destroyers to maneuver close to shore and obliterate the big German gun on the cliff that was mowing down our guys on the beach. It also took mid-level officers to rally the troops and get them to the foot of the cliffs otherwise they would have been slaughtered even more. Unfortunately the weather didn't help either as we were supposed to land at low tide, but off shore breezes and turbulent seas forced the tide in early. We let guys off the boats in deep water, with heavy packs, under machine gun fire. A lot never made it to the beach. Lost 3000 men that day. Once the weather cleared the air power pummeled the German defenses more, as the Luftwaffe was no where to be found since it was back in Germany protecting against incessant Allied bombing raids. Rommel wanted to set up German defenses to prevent us from landing on the beach, but was over-ruled by Hitler who decided to set up defenses further in land to counter us once we had landed. Fatal mistake, much like attacking Russia too late in the summer and getting bogged down in the mud and snow and completely routed, the same mistake Napoleon made. Napoleon and Hitler both launched attacks on Russia on the same date, too late in the year.

Bill, I was in St. Petersburg (Leningrad)last year. That siege went on for 2 and 1/2 years. Millions killed including over 1 million civilians. Our guide was very emotional and the hate was in her voice and expression. Totally understandable. No food in the city with people starving to death month after month. Disgusting.

As I said in the Memorial Day thread which you hijacked: I do understand, however, why you are what you are--believe me
