If you want to see something that is a composite of today's society, look no further then baseball and the demise of the Mets....Collins the Manager has lost complete respect and the players have taken full control.... They claim injury then play golf daily...Every slide or hit by a pitched ball is sure to ensue in a month vacation...The hundred pitch mark is to avoided like the plague.....The slightest sniffle is cause for medical leave....''Tommy John'' surgery is the norm and is used more and more as a excuse to prolong a dying career.. Gone are the days when Lou Gerigh played thousands of straight gameS...When Pitchers pitched complete games of 15 or more innings and were available 2 days later...There is now a strong movement to reduce the game to 7 innings as it is to long of a activity...But it won't be to long before computer technology will be used in reviews... When Babe Ruth hit 3 home runs in last game and wobbled around the bases on his swollen legs...When the old 'Gas house gang' Cardinals took the field bandaged from head to foot.... It is a generation of pansies that have never had to or learned to endure hardship or to meet with pain or adversity... Yeah, I know, there goes that Old ''Curmudgeon'' scaring everybody again...Time will tell...

If today's generation of sports heroes like Pat Tillman are pansies and self-absorbed alcoholics like Babe Ruth are tough, then I would take the pansies any day of the week.

[/quote]05 05........Pat Tillman did give his life for his country, but if you believe according to press stories derived from Government sources he died while charging the enemy up a hill, then you are more gullible then I thought.... Babe Ruth was a man whose name will in infamy...For as you say he was a self-absorbed alcoholic, he sure must have had a amazing tolerance for alcohol as he found time to hit over 700 home runs... Your brain has been infected by liberalism to believe only what fits its teachings....

Super... Super.....My memory goes back a lot further then that....Way before Television remember well going with my Dad and the gang to the Polo Ground to see a double header...Giants against the Cards...King Carl Hubbell and Hal Shoemacher against Paul and Dizzy Dean...Both games ended 1-0 with one going extra innings and both were played in a little over 3 and a half hours...... The minimum baseball players salary was 7,000 dollars...The country was in a uproar when the ''Babe'' received the unheard amount of $80,000 dollars when the average working mans salary was less then 25 dollars a week.... Now to the best of my knowledge any player that makes the Major Leagues must get a minimum salary of 350,000 dollars a season.... It is big business now and was big business then the only difference being the work ethic and long term contracts with there million dollar ''Buy Outs''

I'm going to guess insurance companies dictate things more today than they did in 1925.

He is a hero. Spinning it to politics is disgusting. You are a 91 year old Spin Doctor. Have you no shame ..........

OT...I'm about as far from left wing liberal as you can get. You have a better chance of seeing Iona sign a McDonald's All-American than me voting for Hillary, so not sure how you can deduce that from one comment I made about Babe Ruth and Pat Tillman. That seems like the stuff of a first-class hypocrite if you ask me. My point is that you are quick to call today's athletes pansies, yet glorify the ones who played decades ago. While that might be true in some cases, it seems like a wild and unfair generalization to me. For all of the coddling and first-class treatment that today's athletes receive, they should be given credit for living under a microscope where every single action is documented and scrutinized like never before. If Babe Ruth were playing today he would be criticized no differently than the dozens of athletes in today's era who deal with substance abuse and are dismissed as nothing more than a waste of a role model for today's youth. Your post is the one that wreaks of hypocrisy and narrow mindedness.

A history lesson for those that run and hide from reality......
100 years ago today in probably at that time was the greatest casualty list for one day in the history of warfare...58,000 British Soldiers died or were wounded in the Western Front battle of the Somme in 24 hours.....
Do you think there is enough fortitude in today's world of ''I don't want to know about it'' to withstand that kind of slaughter or don't even have any idea if and when it occurred...
''Those that don't know the lessons of history are sure to repeat them''
