1970, the Iona program is eons ahead of Quinnipiac. Start with location of both schools. It might come down to whether you want to build or maintain a program. Following a legend is not easy, and as a grad he did spend four years in Hamden, but has been in New Ro a lot longer. Family, I've been told, he has a very nice home on LI, which he'd have move from. And finally, Iona facilities will soon be much improved.
Some interesting dollar amounts posted by Jomo on the MAAC board, who is usually very good with his info:
2014 Iona College tax return Timothy Cluess, Men's Basketball Coach base salary $448, 340 retirement comp $13,000 other reportable income $2,672 non-taxable benefits $1,660 bonus $20,000 Total Comp $485,672
2014 Fairfield University tax return Sydney Johnson, Men's Basketball Coach base salary $532,252 retirement comp $20,800 non-taxable benefits $42,439 Total Comp $595,491
Quinnipiac University 2014 tax return Thomas Moore, Men's Basketball Coach base salary $400,000 retirement comp $17,500 other reportable income $65,913 non-taxable benefits $28, 201 Total Comp $511,614
Talk about getting some bang for your buck!

Other points to be considered in evaluating how attractive Head Coach opportunities are 1) How stable and supportive is the administration 2) How supportive are the alums and students 3) How realistic are expectations for program
IMO Coach Cluess came to Iona at the perfect time with the arrival of President Nyre. They appear to work very well together. President Nyre has to be thrilled that he has class act as head coach with minimal drama and who says all the right things coupled with on court success. Pretty sure the Trustees feel they are getting their monies worth from Coach Cluess given the positive press and exposure. Does Quinnipiac provide the above to an incoming coach? They were very patient with Tom Moore, a positive. They appear to be well supported by alums and students, a positive. Not sure what their expectations are. Out of the other MAAC programs the Quinnipiac job on first glance looks good as the cupboard is not bare, if Dixon and Kiss stay.

I've long thought that Sydney Johnson has a great agent. I recall reading that Cluess has reported total comp of just over $515,000 on Iona's 2013 990. Cluess is due for another nice raise.

Nyre is a very effective president. I'm sure he realizes that Cluess is an excellent coach, and that he really wants to keep him happy at Iona. Increasing Cluess' comp again will help, but let's give the program better facilities.
I say that the college needs to bump Associate Head Coach Jared Grasso's compensation to maintain continuity as long as possible. Coach Cluess always gives credit to his players on the success of the program, maybe time for him to give credit to Jared Grasso for finding and securing those players. Recognition for a job well done always goes a long way in job satisfaction. Keep the man happy.

Iwould love to live in your head of balloons and unicorns. Iona will not have facilities like quinny for years, we could have 2 different coaches before then If you think its a sacrifice for grasso to move an hr away u are dreaming
Looking at the salaries 2 things stand out. Looks like TC is way behind in non-taxable benefits and "other reportable income. Any idea what those two categories are? I also didn't notice any income for summer camps, or is part of his base salary?
1970, speaking of dreaming, and Q's admittedly great facilities, there must be a reason why so few students/fans turn out for their games. Is it the fact that their hockey program is so popular? And Tom Moore had a reputation as a recruiter for UCONN but didn't bring in many "name" recruits to Hamden. And do you think that the distance from Locust Valley to Hamden is only an hour? My guess would be 2 1/2 hours.
1970, my take on Iona facilities was made tongue in cheek. But next time you are at the HAC, check out the two plaques in the lobby (The Long Step Forward). We dared to dream, and it can be done. Remember balloons and unicorns are a good thing. And maybe the best thing.
These things almost always come down to $$ and power.
To do what you're suggesting -- increase TC and JG salary to a point where they are incentivized to stay -- will be cost prohibitive. Do you really think Iona can afford to pony up somewhere around $1 million per year in order to retain Cluess and Grasso together? Stop living in dreamland. That is not happening.
Going to be impossible to convince a young assistant coach to pass up more money and a HC opportunity to stay at Iona. And frankly, none of us should want that anyway. Grasso has paid his dues. He deserves his shot to run his own program and a big step up in $$. We all should be rooting for him to get the QU job. I still don't think it's a done deal like some suggest, but he certainly deserves it.
Travis Steele, associate head coach at Xavier, now on Qpac's list. Plenty of solid candidates for the job.
Who do you think they will end up hiring?
I agree with your post that Qpac AD Amodio, and the administration, really do have a vision to move the program up to a higher level conference. Could be a bit delusional on their part, but by eating two years of Moore's contract, they are showing they have the resources. I would think Grasso would be a no brainer, but in my opinion and what I have heard from a donor that I know, Amodio would prefer to hire a coach where he has some ties. I think he really likes Ferry. Amodio also was the associate director of athletics at Xavier before becoming AD at Duquesne. I honestly think he will offer the job to a guy like Steele if he is interested.
I86 mentioned Villanova assistant Kyle Neptune. I have not noticed his name mentioned, but I was told by a person very close to Nova, that he would be very interested in the Qpac job. He has MAAC ties, and though no direct ties with Amodio that I am aware of, naming an assistant coach who was involved with recruiting from last year's national champions would make a "splash" with donors.

Agree. I didn't get to talk to Tim at the Selection Show party, but I did talk to Jared, and said my "goodbyes" just in case. I also told him that I live like 20 minutes from Quinny and I'd come see his team play if he ends up there.
