Bob LaPenta's horse, Catholic Boy, just won the Travers at Saratoga. The horse paid $17 (about) to win. Great to see the Maroon and Gold colors flying down the track in a run-away win. A great race/win. Now it's on to the Breeders Cup (Nov. 1-2) at Lexington, Ky. Today's purse was $1.25M.

1970, a friend who is into horse racing told me about the Travers and Catholic Boy. He now tells me that by winning, Catholic Boy automatically qualifies for the Breeders Cup, which this year will be held at Churchill Downs in November. Going into the Travers, CB was considered a horse that runs better on turf than on dirt. After the race on Saturday the 'experts' said that they would have to reconsider that assessment. My friend also told me that if CB does well in Kentucky it will be a BIG upset.

Morning line 8-1 in the classic. Accelerate the favorite, but without Justify in the lineup it's anybodies race. Only reason to be cautious about betting on Catholic Boy is that it was raised on Siena Farm.

Well, so much for that idea. Travers obviously not a good gauge of the actual talent of a horse.
