This event brings together many who were around/involved with Valvano during his Iona days. Great fun as coaches, players, media folks, etc. gather (especially at the evening party) to share stories and anecdotes about Jimmy V (no speeches). There was a very good group last year at the inaugural event which was conducted on Long Island. More are expected as it has been moved to Wykagyl in New Rochelle this year-May 21. Come out and enjoy some fun and a trip down memory lane. All proceeds go to the V Foundation for Cancer Research. info.eclaro.com/jimmy-v-golf-party-registration

Fun evening with several former players/coaches sharing some wild V stories. Included among them was V's goals of having a private session with the Pope and announcing to a small group on the night he won the NCAA tournament that he wanted an NBA job to became the first coach to win an NCAA and NBA championship. That would insure his entry into the basketball HOF. He also drafted the initial charter for the V Foundation for Cancer Research on a yellow legal pad while he was dying in the hospital. The foundation has since raised nearly a quarter billion dollars.
Dereck Whittenburg had high praise for Tim Cluess and the Iona program overall. He mentioned the frequent NCAA tourney entries. He said that he believed that Iona had never capitalized on the V connection in its fundraising. He also mentioned that NC State had just raised $4 million for the James Valvano basketball court in their arena.
Dave Brown was hilarious and insightful. Kevin Vesey still bemoaning the Penn and Georgetown NCAA losses. They were convinced that they could beat Georgetown and had a clear path to the Final Four.

Super, it always good hear the Jim Valvano stories as he was the reason I became an Iona basketball fan growing up in northern Westchester. It would be nice to recognize his contribution to Iona College with something as part of the renovation. Having players from that era being brought back to the school for an event to tie that era with the current era might be a good start. The history of the program should be highlighted. The Legacy should be shared as the Legacy becomes the College’s identity.
