The NBA is now imposing new restrictions on what fans can say to players at games. Some examples provided included "sexist language or LGBTQ language, any denigrating language in that way, anything that is non-basketball related. This also includes 'your mother' comments, talking about your family, talking about test scores, anything non-basketball related."
I understand the concern by the NBA with over the top fans, but some of the examples provided are a little too much. Obviously some of these examples need to be addressed which they did, but fans won't be able to talk about "anything non-related to basketball." The whole purpose of going to the game and rooting for your home team is to get in the head of the other teams players. What is the harm in talking about a NBA player's test scores in college or about a scandal while they're in college. This is public knowledge which is widely reported. Using that to get under the other teams players I would think is acceptable.
A key component on this which I think the NBA will have a serious problem with is this whole China situation. Recently 100 protestors at the Nets game decided to wear shirts and chant statements regarding the NBA's recent comments about the China protests. They were thrown out of the game for it. In another incident at a Laker's game, fans were protesting Lebron's statements. These players are making statements on their own behalf or doing such action in the public eye. Fans should have a right to criticize players for doing such.
I feel like this is going to trickle down to the NCAA. Duke's student section for example purposely creates themes or chants about player's troubles. When Duke and FSU played a couple years ago, they had a chant regarding a players eligibility issues.
Curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this?
