After attending the game with Manhattan. . .I came away more convinced that Tim Cluess has a unique ability at taking players with individual strengths and weakness and in games putting them in situations where their strengths can shine while the weaknesses are minimized.
Without Cluess there are a lot of chemistry issues with this group of players, who have a degree of talent, but do make a lot of low basketball IQ plays decisions and then seem to point the finger by bickering at each other on the court. I'm assuming the assistant coaches are instructing the players the correct things to do on the court. . .yet this group of players may be tuning them out or worse yet maybe incapable of playing the right way.
As a long-time Iona fan I would give the school poor grades on transparency and communication this year with regard to Cluess' s illness. Maybe the team members also have questions of Cluess's illness and possible return. I'm sure these young men are impacted in some way as our returning players are not performing even at last year's levels. . .while the whole team has gotten worse since our first game this year at LaSalle. As an example, what happened to Ben Perez's shooting compared to last year?
Maybe it's time to start taking players out of games after making turnovers, or not guarding the 3-pont line, or forcing outside shots or when someone misses a dunk where a simple put-in would have given us 2 points. The coaching staff has to get the players heads back in the games and take control of reducing dumb plays. Taking court time away is a start. . .and judging by our last 2 games it is not going to make the scores any worse.

It's really none of our business what illness Cluess is dealing with nor owed a explanation when he might return.
As far as the players are concerned it has been made clear that Cluess has been in constant contact with them. Gist even mentioned Cluess calls him.

Old Coach, I agree with everything you posted. How about you posting more, as you make a lot of sense.

I’m starting to think that’s a stretch.

I agree that we are not owed an explanation regarding TC’s health.

My suggestion is everyone grab a six pack or a bottle of wine and hit up Chatzy for the balance of the year!
