Kind of hard to imagine for someone like me that Iona could win a game like this against the #2 ranked team in the country on a neutral floor. I remember when we beat UNC at MSG and that was a huge deal. In reality, that UNC team was a bubble team and somewhere around 50 RPI or so by the end of the season.

Steve, I remember Jeff McMillan's (I believe) tommahawk dunk, his signature shot. I think he transferred the next year to CW Post. I think his name was Glenn and he took a couple years off before going to C.W. Post.

I already had a thread started on this but ok, would be great if we could merge the two.
I was only 11 but I never remember feeling more thrilled as a fan with a win than how I felt after this game. I imagine it’s how an upset NCAA win would feel, can’t see ever being any more excited about a victory!

The difference between then and now, the large majority of the crowd was rooting for Iona. if we ever got a chance at a game like this again, I bet half the place would be rooting for the other team. Also this wasn’t just an upset, Iona was as good, this team was good enough to win an NCAA title.

I didn’t go to the holy cross game, I remember only being able to listen to it on the radio. it was nice to win but we were supposed to win and we expected to win. I remember My father being annoyed that we had to play this game, he felt our seeding was bad and we should have been a higher seed and would have avoided this first round game ( back then many teams had first round byes). The next game against Georgetown was on national tv on Sunday afternoon and that was the game that would have been just as great to win as Louisville,, it was a typical Iona ncaa loss heartbreaker. I remember crying pretty hard after that loss, I have the excuse of being 11, but it was extremely disappointing.

"As opposed to the sophisticated Crazy Eddie commercials they would have seen if it was in the NY market! Or Tom Carvel with the single cake mold that was Fudgie the Whale, Cookie Puss and some sort of adaptation to every holiday known to mankind.

I imagine it’s how an upset NCAA win would feel, can’t see ever being any more excited about a victory! More than our NCAA win against HC? I was at both. Nothing like a packed MSG roaring for the Gaels. (Don't forget Louisville was #2 but eventually won the NCAA championship) Felt like a Stanley Cup Final. HC game was played in front of a mostly neutral crowd in Providence. The ride home to Westchester after the Georgetown game was awful--could not believe we lost the game. (Ask Mike Palma about it if he's there tonight ) We truly played a national schedule over several years, beating Kansas, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Arizona, UNLV, etc.

First of all, I would like to apologize for splitting up the replies.Being that it was my first time blogging, I thought all you had to do was type I the title and it would continue right under it.Now I know better!, Second,to IC59,YES, I worked for NYT,NYNEX,Bell Atlantic, and finallyVerizon, all of 31 years, retiring in June of 2010,all in Westchester. My wife was happy to have me around,I don’t know about my five daughters and one son!,,, Third, the name Jeff Mcmillian does ring a bell about that dunk.He came in on the right side of the basket and threw it down, explosively. Some things you just remember. I am heading up to the game now from Queens with my Hayes hat on!,See you tonight!,,,

[/https://www.allbrackets.com/1980/1980.pdf Bracket shows we were 6 seed, top 4 seeds got byes, looking back at it no way are they giving Iona a 4 seed despite blowing out Louisville.
