The sports world lost one of the all-time greats with the death of Don Shula, yesterday. And I have to admit that the last time I heard a Don Shula story, it was in church, a few months back. The priest told this story:
Don Shula was up in Maine with his wife and kids on a summer vacation. And one day it was raining so that the Shula family decided to go to a movie. And according to the priest, who was telling the story, it was long after Don Shula had retired. But when the Shula family walked into the theatre they were greeted with a round of applause from the small group of movie goers. And Don Shula turned to his wife and said that it's great to be remembered after all the time that I've been out of coaching. And he went up to one of the people cheering, and asked if he remembered him from when he coached Miami to a perfect season many years ago. And the man said, I have no idea who you are. All I know is that just before you arrived the manager of the movie house came in and announced that there were only ten tickets sold and unless we get another four patrons, we're going to have cancel today's movie.
The church erupted in laughter.
