That's what I meant. If Pitino doesn't want them they won't be back even if they wanted to. I don't know this for a fact, but it seems likely to me. I think Ross could play at a higher level. Maybe not as a starter but I think by the end of the year he has a great shot to be the POY. Ross and Gist will be pro ready after this year. Van Eyck, probably not. The best thing for the 2 guards would be to start pro careers. The right thing to do for the program is to help them achieve their dreams of getting paid to play. Yes. That was my interpretation also.

If there is great growth in Ross game, I can see him wanting to stay to see if he can be a shooting guard in the NBA after 2 yrs with Pitino

The question for Ross and Gist is if they will have a European team to play for with the new mutated strains of covid being discovered. If the EU locks down for an extended period of time teams may fold due to financial constraints.

A few things:
From reading this Board and a few Rick Pitino interviews, it's easy to see that RP feels that next year's team will be better than this year's team. As we all have read, next year's OOC schedule will be daunting and challenging. So will next year's team really be better than this year's team? IMO, this comes down to three players, van Eyck, Gist and Ross. My reasoning is as follows. If Dylan stays, as most think he will, our front court will be better. But even if he leaves, we'll be tall and talented up front. That opinion is based on the improvement of NJJ, with a year's experience, and hopefully OS being healthy and as good as RP says he is. Throw in Trey James and Jordan Wildy, and I think we match up with most teams in the country in the front court.
As for the SF/Wing position, Berrick JeanLouis has shown great athleticism and defensive ability. And with added playing time, Omar Rowe has shown me, that he has ability to be a D1 player. And after a full year, BJL should also improve his offensive game.
We all know that over the years, the MAAC has been considered a guards' League. And there's the rub. If IR and AG stay, Iona moves into the Top 25 conversation. But if they leave, as most seem to be predicting, we will have a big question mark with our back court. Meyers and Chaviz have shown flashes, but not enough to convince me that they are ready to run the show. And I know we have two new guards coming in, with one (Walter Clayton) listed as a PG. The Joshua Duach's HL video shows that he's athletic, but I have no idea of the level of competition "Down Under". The bottom line is that if RP is good with the best backcourt in the MAAC leaving then I guess we as fans, should feel that we'll be okay.
Anyone agree or disagree?

Pitino has already said he's looking for a high scoring transfer (or JUCO) guard. We also know in this era that not everyone will return, so another guard (pure PG?) could be brought in as well.
I wouldn't fret about next year. We'll be more than fine.

I understand the concerns about the guard position next year especially after we lost the two guard recruits who seemed pretty good, However, as Guy alluded to I think we'll probably have some turnover on our roster at the end of the season. Pitino has made it clear if you can't play defense the way he wants you won't get playing time. Some players will buy into this and work their butts off to comply others might not and will not be here next year.
Pitino is a lot smarter than us so I'm sure all areas of weakness will be addressed.

Robert Brown having surgery today. Wishing him full, quick recovery. Just clearing up in my own mind, knee and out for the season?
